For six weeks this spring, the America's PrepareAthon! Campaign and other preparedness partners will focus on different hazards and provide simple actions that people and communities should take to prepare for each particular hazard.
This fifth week highlights hurricanes. Individuals, communities, businesses, schools, and houses of worship around the country are holding preparedness discussions, conducting drills, and taking specific steps to prepare for hurricanes.
People who live in hurricane-prone coastal areas should know their vulnerability to wind and flooding, as well as what to do to reduce the effects of both. People who live inland from coastal areas may also experience high winds, power outages, and flooding from torrential rain. Protecting yourself today means having sources for information, preparing your home and workplace, developing an emergency communication plan, and knowing what to do when a hurricane is approaching your community.

Chiasma, Inc., a U.S. privately–held biopharma company developing octreotide capsules for the orphan condition acromegaly, today announced two new studies presented at the 97th Endocrine Society (ENDO) Annual Meeting in San Diego, Calif. The studies provide additional data from Chiasma’s Phase III trial and new findings on the patient burden of current injection therapies.

For a group of budding business people, living with senior citizens for five days gives impetus to their dreams. It also encourages innovation that could improve the lives of the aging. Early findings from a major research initiative of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) suggest that specific bacteria play a central role in Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis (UC), also known as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). The evidence raises the possibility of developing new treatments to target the gut microbiome—the “ecosystem” of microbes populating the intestines—linked to the development of IBD.
