This spring, John Deere is helping homeowners keep track of and optimize their lawn care responsibilities with the new MowerPlus smartphone application. This free app provides equipment care tips, maintenance information and other resources to ensure that homeowners feel confident maintaining a great looking lawn. The iOS version of MowerPlus allows the user to “Mow Now” and track mowing metrics. Users can view a summary of the current mowing session with average speed, area covered and other real-time statistics. Additionally, an aerial view of the mowing path for each session can help homeowners diversify their pattern to protect turf health. The app also lets homeowners know how long it has been since they last mowed. “Mowing the lawn is so much more than just making tall grass short,” said Kevin Duax, product line planner, John Deere. “With our MowerPlus app, homeowners can easily refer to expert tips and historical data to ensure efficient and effective lawn upkeep.” To view the multimedia release go to: http://www.multivu.com/players/English/7720553-john-deere-mowerplus-app/

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital investigators led the research, which will be presented today at the plenary session of the 2015 annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). The study is one of four being featured at the plenary session press briefing, which highlights research that ASCO deems as having the highest scientific merit and greatest potential to affect patient care. A ten-month clinical trial at Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia has determined that hard surfaces and linens infused with copper oxide compounds contributed to an 83% reduction in C-difficile and a 78% overall reduction in a host of multi-drug resistant organisms (MDROs) including C-diff, MRSA and VRE in a real-world clinical environment. These results occurred in a hospital with a robust protocol for managing infection risk certified by the health care accrediting body DNV-GL Healthcare. The results of the trial were published in the peer-reviewed American Journal of Infection Control on Sept. 28, 2016 and will be presented at the annual conference of the Infectious Disease Society of America in New Orleans, Louisiana on October 27, 2016. As brain health becomes an ever greater concern for people of all ages, the nation’s largest senior living provider is now guiding its residents on developing and putting into practice personalized brain health plans. Brookdale devised the new resident program with the help of a neuropsychologist specializing in brain health. The company is putting it into place at its independent and assisted living communities across the country. Through the new initiative, Brookdale’s residents will be offered a four-session course that explains key factors in brain health through classroom learning and hands-on activities. Each participant will be guided on creating an individual brain health plan to use on a daily basis. The course was developed with the assistance of Dr. Paul Nussbaum, who is Board Certified in clinical and geropsychology with a specialty in neuropsychology. An adjunct professor of neurological surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, he is the author of “Save Your Brain.” To view the multimedia release go to: http://www.multivu.com/players/English/7722157-brookdale-brain-health/

Team In Training. Light The Night. Man & Woman of the Year. Student Series. Leukemia Cup Regatta. More than 13 million participants in these popular fundraising campaigns last year alone helped The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) invest more than $1 billion in research to advance lifesaving treatments and cures for blood cancer patients. For Blood Cancer Awareness Month this September, LLS is reminding us that despite progress, much work still needs to be done to save more lives. More than 1.2 million people in the U.S. are living with or in remission from a blood cancer. Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children, adolescents and adults younger than 20 years. Leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma are expected to cause the deaths of an estimated 58,320 people in the U.S. in 2016. The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) today released new advertising as part of its “From Hope to Cures” campaign, highlighting the stories of rare blood and lung cancer survivors. The newest video in the collection features Matt, who was diagnosed nearly seven years ago with advanced non-small cell lung cancer. When he was diagnosed, he was given a slim chance of living up to five years. However, today Matt continues to lead an active life due to recent advancements in targeted gene therapies and innovations in cancer medicines. The latest print and digital ads feature Jamie, a vibrant woman diagnosed 15 years ago with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). Watching her son grow up was a primary focus for her, and she’s been able to continue to do that and so much more. Thanks to advancements in CML treatments, today she maintains her sense of humor and imparts an infectious joy on those who meet her. Earlier this year, the first collection of digital and print ads was released featuring Rhys, a five-year-old living with type 1 diabetes and celiac disease. Unveiled alongside the advertising was a video, titled “We’re Fighting Back,” which features both Rhys and Jamie, as well as Jen, a researcher who wakes up every day working to find new treatments and cures for patients. International research led by University College London (UCL) as part of the ‘Cities Changing Diabetes’ partnership programme challenges current scientific understanding of the rapid rise of diabetes in cities. The findings suggest that in cities around the world, social and cultural factors play a far more important role in the spread of the epidemic than previously thought. More than two thirds of the world’s 400 million people with diabetes live in urban areas.1,2 The year-long study for Cities Changing Diabetes, a unique public-private-academic partnership, sought to better understand what makes people vulnerable to type 2 diabetes in cities in order to inform solutions for one of the most pressing modern-day public health challenges. To explore this complex issue, more than 550 interviews were undertaken with at-risk and diagnosed people in five major cities – Copenhagen, Houston, Mexico City, Shanghai and Tianjin. “By largely focusing on biomedical risk factors for diabetes, traditional research has not adequately accounted for the impact of social and cultural drivers of disease,” says David Napier, Professor of Medical Anthropology, UCL. “Our pioneering research will enable cities worldwide to help populations adapt to lifestyles that make them less vulnerable to diabetes.” To view the multimedia release go to: http://www.multivu.com/players/English/7690951-study-rethink-rise-diabetes-in-cities/

A recent survey conducted by DSM Nutritional Products found that 83 percent of adults in the U.S. believe worsening eye health is inevitable with age. What many people don’t realize is that there’s a connection between healthy eyes and proper nutrition, and it goes beyond eating carrots. According to Dr. Kimberly Reed, optometrist and Ocular Nutrition Society board member, “Incorporating certain nutrients into the diet can support a lifetime of healthy vision and help protect against serious conditions, including cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The latter affects more than 2 million Americans and can lead to severe visual impairment.” To view Multmedia News Release, go to: http://www.multivu.com/players/English/7129751-dsm-nutritional-products-eye-health-survey/
