Many parents had their children vaccinated when they were younger, but some vaccines are also recommended for older children. Beyond focusing on school supplies, extracurricular activities, and fall schedules, the back-to-school time is a good opportunity for parents to talk with their health care professional about vaccines that may be recommended for their preteen or teen. Brett Hoebel is one of the most sought-after lifestyle fitness experts in the country, you might remember him as one of the “secret” trainers on the long-running show, “The Biggest Loser®.” Since leaving the show, his integrative and holistic leading-edge fitness program has made Brett one of the most popular celebrity trainers in the nation. He is sharing his health and wellness strategies for people trying to get in shape in the New Year, or how to “fit” a workout regimen into your busy life that you will maintain year round. There are so many healthy food and beverage options now to help family members of all ages manage their eating habits. Just like most parents, I'm not a fan of putting kids on a restrictive “diet,” but simple food-swaps can make a big impact, without the kids even knowing it. For instance, one suggested swap for the younger family members is Juicy Juice Fruitifuls. It has 35% less sugar than regular juice, a full serving of fruit and a taste kid's love. In fact, replacing a regular juice box with Fruitifuls every day can reduce annual sugar intake by 13 cups.

In recognition of Men’s Health Awareness Month and the start of summer, the American Academy of Dermatology (Academy) has released findings from a new survey, which found that more than 90% of American men know something about skin cancer, but only six in 10 (61%) know how to detect signs on their skin, and even fewer actually visit a doctor for annual skin cancer screenings (18%). These shortcomings were more apparent in younger men (18-34), who were also significantly less likely to believe that they are at risk for skin cancer than men over 35 (31% vs. 42%), and are more likely to protect their skin for cosmetic reasons than they are for health reasons (32% vs. 20%). Abbott announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Tecnis Symfony® Intraocular Lenses for the treatment of cataracts. The first in a new category of intraocular lenses (IOLs), the Tecnis Symfony lenses are the only lenses in the United States that provide a full range of continuous high-quality vision following cataract surgery, while also mitigating the effects of presbyopia by helping people focus on near objects. The FDA approval includes a version of the lens for people with astigmatism, the Tecnis Symfony Toric IOL. Cataracts are a common condition, with almost 4 million cataract surgeries performed each year, and that number is expected to increase.1 By age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery.2 However, cataracts do not just impact seniors. In 2016 it is estimated that nearly one in four cataract surgeries will be performed on people younger than 65.1 Many people who have cataracts experience other problems with their vision, such as presbyopia and astigmatism, which the Symfony lenses also address. Presbyopia, which affects most people over age 40, means people have lost the ability to focus on objects up close and often require glasses to perform near visual tasks. Astigmatism is when the cornea is misshapen, which causes blurry or distorted vision. To view the multimedia release go to: http://www.multivu.com/players/English/7870151-abbott-intraocular-lenses/

For a group of budding business people, living with senior citizens for five days gives impetus to their dreams. It also encourages innovation that could improve the lives of the aging. They are all participants in Brookdale’s Entrepreneur in Residence program, part of the company’s “Rewiring Aging” initiative to enrich seniors’ lives through technology. Recently launched by America’s largest senior living provider, the program offers those entrepreneurs developing products and services for seniors the opportunity to move in for that period of time so they can better understand the true wants and needs of the aging. “The majority of start-ups focus on younger markets, but we have seen a growing number of entrepreneurs interested in building solutions for seniors and their families” said Andrew Smith, Brookdale’s director of strategy and innovation. “The 80 and above age group is America’s fastest-growing population. We believe there’s an enormous opportunity to enhance seniors’ lives with new technologies, services, products and business models. This program gives entrepreneurs a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that we hope will inspire even more innovation for the aging.” To view the multimedia release go to: http://www.multivu.com/players/English/7722155-brookdale-senior-living-innovate/
