Despite sluggish recovery by the nation’s economy, the restaurant industry is projected to expand in 2012, according to the National Restaurant Association’s 2012 Restaurant Industry Forecast released today. Total restaurant industry sales are expected to reach a record high of $632 billion in 2012 – a 3.5 percent increase over 2011, marking the second consecutive year that industry sales have topped $600 billion.
In addition, the restaurant industry will continue to fuel U.S. employment in the year ahead as the nation’s second largest private sector employer. Overall restaurant industry employment will reach 12.9 million in 2012, representing 10 percent of the total U.S. workforce.

Reed Street Productions, creators of the zombie-infested 5K adventure race, Run for Your Lives, announced today that the race will expand beyond its inaugural location outside of Baltimore into 12 cities across the country, starting with the Atlanta area on March 3, 2012. The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) reported today that 2011 is on track (final numbers will be published in the fall) as yet another consecutive year of declining vehicle thefts. The View’s Elisabeth Hasselbeck hosted the eighth-annual More Magazine | Fitness Magazine Women’s Half-Marathon in Central Park on April 3rd. More and Fitness magazines in partnership with New York Road Runners, welcomed nearly 10,000 runners for the biggest women’s-only half marathon in the country. Hasselbeck also participated in the race, running her first half marathon with her own Team Nogii to raise money for Celiac Disease research, an autoimmune disease from which she suffers. Hasselbeck finished with a time of 1:44:32.
