It's longer – and deeper – than any other train tunnel in the world. Sunday 11 December 2016 sees the entering into service of the Gotthard Base Tunnel. This pioneering project will enable passengers to speed under the Alps in some 17 minutes. The dual-track tunnel will bring northern and southern Switzerland closer together, and cut travel time between neighbouring countries. It will permit passengers from near and far to spend more time at their destination, discovering the many delights of Switzerland north and south of the Alps.

June 2016 saw the festive inauguration of the Gotthard Base Tunnel – a 17-year pioneering project which extends for 57 kilometres down to a maximum depth of 2300 metres under the Gotthard massif. The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) have now finished subjecting the tunnel to exhaustive safety and technical tests. On Sunday 11 December – the day on which Switzerland's public transport network changes its annual timetable nationwide – the Gotthard Base Tunnel will enter into scheduled service.

For children in hospitals, sometimes the best medicine and moments of joy can come with four paws, a wet nose, and a wagging tail. Today, the Joy in Childhood Foundation, the independent charitable foundation powered by Dunkin’ and Baskin-Robbins, is launching its Dogs for Joy program to bring in-residence dogs to children’s hospitals nationwide. Dogs in this program are bred and trained as service dogs but “work” full-time in children’s hospitals. Through more than $2M in initial grants the program will dramatically increase the number of in-residence dog programs in pediatric healthcare settings around the country and the prevalence of animal-assisted therapy as part of treatment.

“The Santa Lucia Highlands are as unique as the people who settled them,” says Canon 13 winemaker Tom Klassen. “Sitting high on a bench overlooking a fertile valley, the vines grow deep in the alluvial soils that cling to the hillsides. Our fruit is protected by the maritime breezes that bring with them a gentle fog, ensuring the grapes ripen evenly and provide our wines with supple texture and fragrant aromatics found nowhere else.”
Canon 13 is inspired by our geographic birthplace at the Soledad Mission, the 13th mission located along the El Camino Real, the historic 600-mile stretch of road connecting dozens of missions and pueblos beginning in the late 1700s.
