For an audience of 300 at the New York Stock Exchange, including members of the New York Cosmos and New York Red Bulls, the America SCORES 7th Annual National Poetry SLAM! featured poetry performances by 27 elementary school children from 14 cities. Also in attendance were guests of honor football legend Shep Messing and soccer visionary, Joseph Tacopina. The event, a benefit for America SCORES, reached its $150,000 fundraising goal thanks largely to these honorees and their friends, including international soccer icon Pelé, who collectively matched the evening’s donations with $10,000. Funds will be used to continue delivering high-quality afterschool programs for 8,000 youth at no cost to their families. Donations can be made at: www.americascores.org/slamweek.

Spoken Word Written by Zuhayr Essenouni & Mounir
This spoken word is about how some young boys are enticed into gang life due to the lack of choice. Their upbringing saw this as the only option. They didn't find acceptance in school or home but got respect from gang members. They felt like they were part of something bigger than themselves. I also try to depict how they don't really care about you and the only aim is making money. so when you do slip up or make a mistake they will turn on you. The final part is about regretting what you did and wanting to change. This is a 100% guarantee for all gang members. There will come a time where it is either love, family or moral/ ethical reasons to stop. one way or another all gang members realise that the life is not for them.
We as youth should not be swayed but the idea of money and acceptance. Gangsters are not role models they are humans that are in a very bad situation and need help themselves. It is not a life that should be glamorised.

CarolAnn Barrows has been invited by a sacred music scholar who works for the Turkish Ministry of Culture to be the first person ever to sing their most beloved, 500-year-old epic poem –the Mevlidi Sherif– in English.
This is the most frequently recited poem in the world and is cherished by Turkish Muslims, much as Christmas carols are by Christians. Unlike Christmas carols, this poem is sung and recited throughout the year.
You can be part of this historic, cross-cultural, musical peacemaking project by joining the Kickstarter campaign today.
It is only when we understand the stories of another culture that we can truly embrace their deeply held values. Then we naturally discover the common threads of peace, harmony and goodwill that weave their way through all of our stories.

Acclaimed poet Bao Phi delivers a powerful, honest glimpse into a relationship between father and son—and between cultures, old and new. A Different Pond is an unforgettable story about a simple event—a long-ago fishing trip. Between hope-filled casts, Bao’s father told him about a different pond in their homeland of Vietnam. The New York Times has said that Bao Phi’s poetry “rhymes with the truth.” Together with graphic novelist Thi Bui’s striking, evocative art, Phi’s expertly crafted prose reflects an immigrant family making its way in a new home while honoring its bonds to the past.
