Im Design, beim Aufbau der leichten Karosserie und in den Abmessungen ist der 3,95 Meter lange Neue eng mit seinem dreitürigen Schwestermodell verwandt. Er baut um einige Millimeter höher, damit bietet er mehr Platz auf der Rücksitzbank. Audi liefert den A1 Sportback serienmäßig mit vier, auf Wunsch ohne Aufpreis mit fünf Sitzen aus.
Als Antrieb stehen vier TFSI-Benziner und drei TDI bereit, ihre Leistungsspanne reicht von 63 kW (86 PS) bis 136 kW (185 PS). Für einige Motoren liefert Audi die blitzschnell schaltende Siebengang S tronic als Kraftübertragung.
