Although many people have toyed with the idea of installing solar panels to generate their own electricity, they may not be aware quite how simple the whole process can be. A brand new stop motion video from energy efficiency specialists, The Eco Experts, shows fitting a panel to your roof really is child’s play. The brains behind the stop motion animation was Eco Experts’ employee, Ian Wright, who spent two days playing with Lego to create the film. Based on data provided by the California Solar Initiative (CSI), sales of new production homes with rooftop solar power systems nearly doubled from 2011 to 2012, signaling increasing home buyer demand to control monthly electricity costs using clean, renewable solar power. An estimated 4,000 new production solar homes were built in California last year, ten times the number built just seven years ago during the housing construction boom. SunPower estimates that strong growth in the sector will continue, with more than 20 percent of new production homes being solar powered this year. For negotiators at the Paris climate conference (COP21) to successfully advance global efforts to reduce carbon emissions, nations must embrace a prominent role for nuclear energy. The Obama administration highlighted the crucial role of nuclear energy when it convened a White House Summit on Nuclear Energy earlier this month. “As America leads the global transition to a low-carbon economy, the continued development of new and advanced nuclear technologies along with support for currently operating nuclear power plants is an important component of our clean energy strategy,” a White House fact sheet developed for the summit states. Many environmentalists are also giving nuclear energy a second look, as they seek practical solutions to constrain carbon emissions. Nuclear energy facilities provide 63 percent of America’s zero-carbon electricity. Globally, nuclear power plants provide one-third of all zero-carbon electricity. One of nuclear energy’s major advantages relative to other low-carbon energy sources is its unique ability to produce large-scale electricity around-the-clock in extreme weather conditions. Nuclear energy facilities don’t rely on the wind blowing, the sun shining, or just-in-time deliveries of fuel by truck, barge, rail or pipeline. In 2014, the U.S. nuclear energy industry’s average capacity factor—a common measure of efficiency and reliability—was 92 percent. The winners of the Natural Light - International Design Competition have now been chosen from the 172 impressive Natural Light Lamp designs submitted from 65 countries around the world. The winners are two very talented Argentinian Industrial Design students, Ms. Mariana Arando and Mr. Luca Fondello, both from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The production phase of the winning design for the Natural Light Lamp will begin shortly, followed next year by shipment of the lamps to three African countries without access to electricity. Last year, the VELUX Group and Little Sun joined forces to launch the Natural Light – International Design Competition, which challenged design students around the world to create a design for a solar lamp which would help to bring clean, reliable, affordable light to some of the 1.2 billion people worldwide living without electricity. Now the jury has voted and decided on the winning solar lamp design by two Industrial Design students from the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina. For many sports fans, it’s “that” time of the year. College and professional football season equate to prime time tailgating season. Fans seem to be tailgating more than ever as Tailgater Magazine estimates that 50 million people tailgate annually in North America. Each year, tailgaters seem to try to compete for the biggest and best tailgates. Besides radios, blenders, and hot plates, it’s not uncommon to find big screen TVs, gaming systems, stereos, and of course, cell phone chargers at a typical tailgate this fall. All of this electronic equipment requires portable power to keep it running. Briggs & Stratton’s PowerSmart Series™ P3000 inverter generator takes tailgating to a whole new level for sports fans that require a quiet, lightweight, and fuel efficient portable generator to power all of their big game tailgating essentials.
