Darum ist die Shanghai Autoshow für die Hersteller auch eine der wichtigsten im Kalender. VW zeigt die innovative Studie CrossBlue Coupé. Ein 415 PS starkes SUV das von einem V6-Benziner und zwei Elektromotoren befeuert wird, aber nur drei Liter auf 100 Kilometer verbraucht. Mit dem neuen Rapid dürfte Skoda das richtige Auto für die Chinesen haben, die sich zum ersten Mal überhaupt ein Auto kaufen. Auch wenn das für uns kaum vorstellbar ist, gibt es davon im Reich der Mitte immer noch eine ganze Menge. Opel ist nach fünfjähriger Abstinenz wieder auf der wichtigsten Automesse Chinas und hat dazu drei neue Modelle, die im Laufe des Jahres dort auf den Markt kommen werden, mitgebracht. Die Autoshow in Shanghai zeigt, dass das Auto im boomenden China einen ganz hohen Stellenwert hat. Auch wenn inzwischen das Thema Umweltverträglichkeit wichtiger geworden ist, als noch vor einigen Jahren, ist es mehr als nur ein Transportmittel. Vielmehr ist das richtige Auto ein Accessoire um sein Image aufzupolieren und Eindruck zu machen. Und Europäische Autos werden deshalb auch zukünftig in der Käufergunst weiter vorne liegen.
Auf den Etappen der diesjährigen Mille Miglia hat der Himmel zeitweise zwar alle seine Schleusen geöffnet und stellte an die Fahrer noch größere Anforderungen als sonst, um ihre wertvollen Oldtimer nach rund 1.600 Kilometern wohlbehalten in Brescia wieder ins Ziel zu bringen. Two all-electric vehicles fall short of meeting the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s awards criteria, but consumers who want to minimize gas consumption while also prioritizing safety can choose from two plug-in hybrids that earn the 2017 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award.
The two recently evaluated all-electric models are the 2017 Tesla Model S and the 2017 BMW i3. The plug-in hybrid models are the Chevrolet Volt, whose award was announced in December, and the Toyota Prius Prime.
To qualify for the 2017 TOP SAFETY PICK award, a vehicle must earn good ratings in all five crashworthiness evaluations — small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints — and come with a front crash prevention system that earns an advanced or superior rating. The “plus” is awarded to vehicles that meet all those criteria and also come with good or acceptable headlights.

Dabei ist es egal, ob es sich um deutsche oder ausländische Autobauer handelt, ist es egal, ob es um sich auf die IAA getaktete neue Modelle oder um extra für die Motorshow entwickelte Concept Cars handelt. Bei der Vielzahl der Weltpremieren ist nur eine kleine Auswahl möglich. Bei den Serienfahrzeugen sorgen unter anderem der Mercedes GLA, der BMW i3, der Peugeot 308 für Furore. Bei den Concept Cars sind es der Opel Monza, der Infiniti Q30, der Lexus LN-XF, das Volvo Coupé, der smart Fourjoy, der Citroen Cactus und der Renault Initiale Paris für besonderes Interesse. Nicht zuletzt, weil etliche dieser Studien schon bald und nur leicht verändert auf den Markt kommen werden.

The ratings bring to 16 the number of small SUVs the Institute has evaluated in the passenger-side small overlap front test, which was introduced in 2017 to encourage manufacturers to offer the same level of protection for front-seat passengers as drivers in this type of crash.
The BMW X1; Chevrolet Equinox and its twin, the GMC Terrain; Jeep Compass and Mitsubishi Outlander earn good ratings in the passenger-side small overlap front test. The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport earns a marginal rating, and the Ford Escape earns poor. For the 2018 model year, the Equinox shed weight to join the small SUV size class. Earlier models were classified as midsize.
None of the newly rated 2018 models earns better than acceptable marks for structure. (The Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 are the only small SUVs evaluated so far to earn good ratings for structure in the passenger-side small overlap front test.) The Outlander Sport is marginal, and the Escape is rated poor. Both the Outlander Sport and Escape allowed too much intrusion into the occupant compartment on the right side.
Parking crashes usually don’t result in serious injuries, but repair costs can quickly mount, along with the hassle of going without the family vehicle while waiting for the body shop to finish work. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has launched a rear crash prevention ratings program to help consumers identify models with the technology that can prevent or mitigate low-speed backing crashes. Two systems earn the highest rating of superior, and four earn the second-highest rating of advanced.
Rear crash prevention encompasses several technologies. Parking sensors issue warning beeps and/or seat vibrations when the equipped vehicle gets too close to another vehicle or object directly behind it, or, in some cases, in front of it. Rear cross-traffic alert warns drivers of approaching vehicles that might cross their path as they back up. Rear automatic emergency braking systems detect objects behind a reversing vehicle and may automatically brake if the driver doesn’t heed alerts to stop.
IIHS engineers evaluated rear autobrake systems on six popular 2017 model vehicles — the BMW 5 series sedan, Cadillac XT5 SUV, Infiniti QX60 SUV, Jeep Cherokee SUV, Subaru Outback wagon and Toyota Prius hatchback.
Under the three-tier rating scheme, models with optional or standard rear crash prevention systems are rated superior, advanced or basic. Ratings are determined by whether the vehicles have available rear autobrake and, if so, how it performs in a series of car-to-car and car-to-pole tests with different approach angles. The availability of parking sensors and rear cross-traffic alert also is factored in.
The Outback and XT5 earn a superior rating when equipped with optional rear autobrake, parking sensors and rear cross-traffic alert. The Cherokee, 5 series, QX60 and Prius earn an advanced rating with this optional gear.
