Quadriplegic former IndyCar driver and current team owner Sam Schmidt completed the bottom half of the challenging, high-altitude Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb yesterday in the Arrow Electronics, Inc. (NYSE:ARW) Semi-Autonomous Motorcar (SAM car).
Schmidt, who was paralyzed from the neck down in a crash during an IndyCar practice lap in 2000, is able to steer, accelerate and brake the modified 2016 Corvette Z06 SAM car using only his head. Sensors mounted on an Arrow-designed high-tech headset that Schmidt wears connect to infrared cameras mounted on the dashboard and detect his head-tilt motions to steer. A sip-and-puff device that Smith breathes into enables him to accelerate and brake.

For every specially-marked bottle of French’s Mustard sold between April 18 and November 30, and specially-marked bottles of French’s Ketchup sold between April 18 and December 31, one meal* will be donated to the Feeding America nationwide network of 200 food banks.
More than 48 million people in America struggle with food insecurity, including 15 million children – at a life stage when food is critical to healthy growth and development. Food insecurity is defined as a lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life, according to the USDA. It is an issue that affects every single county in our country.
“Food insecurity all too often goes unseen, but every day, millions of people in America are faced with insufficient food for themselves or their families,” said Diana Aviv, CEO of Feeding America. “Through this partnership with French’s, our nationwide network of food banks is better able to help fill this gap. Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, has announced that it will introduce Skype for Business, Microsoft’s leading collaborative productivity app, to its new 90 Series cars. Volvo Cars is the first carmaker to launch such an in-car productivity tool.
“We’ve all been there. Sitting in the car trying to join a conference call. You either fumble with or drop your phone while trying to connect or you forget the long pin code to join. It’s not the best way to start an important call in the car. On top of all that your attention is not where it should be – on the road. With the addition of Skype for Business all that goes away,” said Anders Tylman-Mikiewicz Vice President Consumer Connectivity Services at Volvo Car Group.
Skype for Business is actively used by millions of people at work around the globe. In Volvo’s 90 Series cars people will be able to view their upcoming meetings and participant details, and join meetings with one click via the large centre display.
