Der Beetle von Volkswagen zieht in diesem Sommer in den US-Motorsport ein. Am Rande der New York International Auto Show stellt Volkswagen of America den Rallycross-Beetle mit Allradantrieb vor, dessen TSI-Motor mehr als 560 PS (412 kW) leistet. Volkswagen of America hat sich für dieses Projekt mit dem US-Rennsport-Spezialisten Andretti Autosport zum Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross Team zusammengeschlossen, das zwei Global Rallycross (GRC) Fahrzeuge für die Rennfahrer Tanner Foust und Scott Speed stellt. Das Team startet die Saison zunächst mit zwei modifizierten Polos auf der Bodengruppe des 2013 World Rally Championship-Siegerautos. Im Sommer erfolgt dann der Wechsel auf den GRC Beetle, wie er in New York präsentiert wird. Mit diesem allradgetriebenen Rallycross Beetle stellt Volkswagen in den USA gleichzeitig das leistungsstärkste Modell der Baureihe vor: Der TSI-Motor leistet durch Aufladung und Direkteinspritzung mehr als 560 PS. Rallycross gehört zu den Motorsport-Disziplinen in Amerika, deren Fangemeinde am rasantesten wächst - sowohl in Besucherzahlen als auch in Bezug auf TV-Einschaltquoten. Die anspruchsvollen Rundkurse bestehen teils aus Staubpisten, teils aus Asphalt und bieten den Zuschauern durch Niveauunterschiede mitunter spektakuläre Sprünge der Wettbewerbsfahrzeuge von über 20 Meter Länge.

18 Teams, die sich in ihren Heimatländern bereits mit einem leichten Gasfuß als beste Spritsparer durchgesetzt hatten, fuhren jetzt an der Westküste der USA um den Word-Champion-Titel. Genau 647 Kilometer quer durch Kalifornien auf einem Kurs mit unterschiedlichem Streckenprofil. Von Stadtdurchfahrten bis hin zum kurvigen Pacific Coast Highway war alles dabei. Die Teilnehmer starteten mit identischen VW Jetta Hybrid. Eine ideale Voraussetzung für beeindruckende Verbrauchsergebnisse möchte man meinen, gehört das Fahrzeug von Hause aus doch zu den sparsamsten Autos. Gewinnen konnte jedoch nur, wer das Potenzial der Hybridtechnik für sich auch zu nutzen wusste und möglichst viele Kilometer mit elektrischer Zuarbeit zurücklegte.

I was there during the Press Only days and attending the unveiling new Compass, the Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel (diesel) and the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. After the press conference I was talking with people that work for Jeep. One of the Jeep Executives said that because they drive a Jeep and work at Jeep weather is not an excuse to not come into work. LOL. awesome. Its a Jeep. Volvo Cars’ all-new XC90 – which will be revealed in August – will offer the most comprehensive and technologically sophisticated standard safety package available in the automotive industry.
