A recent Harris Interactive survey on the attitudes of the American public towards healthcare acquired infections (HAIs) revealed that almost one quarter (24%) of U.S. adults or someone they know have had an infection as a result of a stay in a hospital; and that 37% are most concerned about the spread of germs and bacteria in hospitals, as compared to other public places.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), nearly 2 million people acquire infections while in U.S. hospitals each year; and almost 100,000 die as a result.

Littered cigarette butts are more than just an eye sore. According to environmental clean-up reports, cigarette butts are the No. 1 littered item on U.S. roadways and the No. 1 item found on beaches and waterways worldwide. A new survey conducted by Legacy, shows that while more than 88 percent of Americans surveyed think that cigarette butts are an environmental concern, more than 44 percent of those polled who had ever smoked admit to having dropped a cigarette on the ground and nearly 32 percent have dropped a cigarette out of a car window.

Inspired by its surrounding southwestern landscape, the Health Sciences Education Building (HSEB) at The University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix is one of the most innovative construction projects in the United States utilizing predominately recycled copper. Using nearly 6,000 copper panels and more than 10,000 copper parts, this 268,000 square-foot building consists of six stories of administration and faculty offices, lecture halls, learning studios, flexible classrooms, clinical suites, gross anatomy facilities, laboratories and conference rooms.

In the wake of recent tragedy, the Newtown community came together to show the nation the true meaning of “Newtown strong.” It was inspiring to see such overwhelming support for a small, quiet town in the face of such extreme adversity.
The Strides for Sandy Hook 5k memorial run/walk was created as a way for local residents to continue the healing process. The 5k took place on Saturday, January 19, 2013. The unofficial community run honored the lives of victims lost in the December 14, 2012 tragedy. While there was a suggested donation of $25 for participants, any amount was accepted—no matter how big or small. Strides for Sandy Hook attracted nearly 200 walkers and runners and raised over $3,600 on January 19 alone. All donations and proceeds were given towards a memorial fund established by Newtown Parks and Recreation, the Newtown Park Gift Fund.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) and Teva Respiratory released results today from a new survey which showed that more than half (59 percent) of nasal allergy sufferers polled reported sleep issues as a result of their allergy symptoms, yet only 35 percent proactively treat their nasal allergy symptoms. Furthermore, nearly half of those surveyed (48 percent) said their nasal allergy symptoms, such as nasal congestion and sneezing, also interrupted their partner’s sleep.

To promote the adoption of teenagers from foster care, the Administration for Children and Families (ACF), AdoptUSKids and the Ad Council are unveiling a new series of multimedia public service advertisements (PSAs). Today, more than 33,000 teenagers await adoption from the U.S. foster care system. Nearly 50 percent (14,000) are between the ages of 14 and 16.
These new PSAs are part of the Adoption from Foster Care campaign launched in 2004. Since the launch of the campaign more than 15,000 children have been placed with a permanent family.

A new study from Robert Half and Financial Executives Research Foundation (FERF), the research affiliate of Financial Executives International (FEI), provides insight into professional standards across the finance function, including the average size of finance departments, hours worked and technologies used. In recognition of International Women’s Day, Avon Foundation for Women Ambassador Salma Hayek Pinault and Avon Products, Inc. CEO Sheri McCoy announced that four global organizations and one government campaign have received 2nd Avon Communications Awards: Speaking Out About Violence Against Women for their outstanding work to bring attention to the need to end violence against women. The awards, presented at the United Nations Headquarters during the 57th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, are part of the Avon Speak Out Against Domestic Violence program, which has donated nearly $50 million globally to end violence against women since its launch in 2004.
