Quest Diagnostics (NYSE: DGX), the world’s leading provider of diagnostic information services, commemorated its 50-year anniversary by awarding $150,000 in total grants to three organizations that share its goal to improve healthcare: The American Red Cross, the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and Autism Speaks.
At a ceremony at the company’s flagship clinical laboratory in Teterboro, NJ, the company’s chairman, president and CEO Steve Rusckowski presented Health In Your Hands grants of $50,000 to representatives from each organization. Paul Brown, M.D., founder and former CEO of Quest’s predecessor company Metropolitan Pathology Laboratory, Inc. or MetPath, established in April, 1967, was also recognized at the event.

Extending its award-winning “Learn the Signs” campaign, Autism Speaks – the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization – today joined the Ad Council, along with partner agencies BBDO New York and LatinWorks, to announce the launch of a new series of public service advertisements (PSAs) designed to reach African American and Hispanic parents. According to research, children in these communities are often diagnosed later than the average. The PSAs, which are being distributed to media outlets nationwide this week, show some of the early signs of autism and encourage parents to take immediate action if their child is not meeting standard developmental milestones.

Poor children in the Dominican Republic will now have a chance at a better life through Children International, a U.S.-based humanitarian organization, thanks to businessman Larry Phelan.
The Philadelphia attorney funded the newly inaugurated signature community center that will serve 5,000 children in the slum of La Caleta near Santo Domingo. The center will provide children access to medical and dental care, education support, and nutritional programs.
Mr. Phelan was inspired to work with Children International by his friend Dan Phelan, who funded another center in the Dominican Republic. Much like Dan’s facility, the Larry T. Phelan Community Center is state-of-the-art, with a medical clinic, dental clinic, pharmacy, library, playground, computer lab and a sports complex.

New research published in the September issue of the British Journal of Nutrition and featured in the just released Global Phytonutrient Report highlights a significant shortfall in fruit and vegetable consumption in people’s diets around the world. Commissioned by the Nutrilite Health Institute of Amway, the research finds the majority of adults worldwide would have to at least double their current consumption of fruits and vegetables to meet the World Health Organization’s minimum recommendation of five servings (400 grams) per day. Additionally, the vast majority of adults worldwide – 60 to 87 percent across 13 geographic diet regions – are falling short of this recommendation and missing out on crucial nutrition and health benefits.

In an unprecedented gesture of love and kindness coinciding with Valentine’s Day on February 14, 2012, the relationship matching services company, Valenti International, announced a pledge today by its Founder, Irene Valenti, to personally donate $5000 along with a commitment to raise an additional $25,000-$30,000 to recoup the losses suffered by the non-profit organization Empty Cradle, which recently fell victim to embezzlement. The American Pain Foundation (APF) announced today the launch of new information and resources on pain medication safety for acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as a part of its PainSAFE™ educational initiative. The new information will be launched with a national public service announcement (PSA) emphasizing the safe use of pain treatment options, particularly medications containing NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen) and acetaminophen (Tylenol, APAP).
