As National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month comes to a close, m.powerment by mark. in partnership with the Avon Foundation for Women, announces a total of $1 million in funds raised since its inception in 2008. m.powerment by mark. is dedicated to breaking the cycle of dating abuse and partner violence and provides grants to agencies across the country that bring awareness to the cause.

Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated actress and advocate Kerry Washington has joined with The Allstate Foundation to raise awareness about domestic violence and the critical role that financial abuse plays in domestic violence situations. Washington is serving as the national ambassador for Allstate Foundation Purple Purse, the signature initiative that gets Americans motivated to combat domestic violence.

Allstate Foundation Purple Purse® ambassador Kerry Washington unveiled her latest purse design to bring attention to domestic violence and financial abuse before an audience of community leaders, survivors and VIPs on Sept. 24 in New York City. In so doing, she also kicked off a month-long effort to raise funds for domestic violence programs nationwide.
Golden Globe and Emmy nominated Washington partnered with handbag designer, Dee Ocleppo, to create the 2015 Purple Purse. The limited-edition, on-trend clutch was created to encourage the public to talk about domestic violence and financial abuse. This year, the purple purse, retailing at $350, is available for purchase beginning Sept. 25 at select Saks Fifth Avenue locations and on Saks.com with 25 percent of proceeds supporting abuse programs.

“When I decided to come back to school and pursue my bachelor’s degree I did have a fear of how I was going to fit the studies into my schedule. It had been quite a while since I graduated with my associate’s degree. I was already working full time when I started here at Kaplan [University], and I’m also a parent. I have a 7-year-old daughter and it was really helpful that they were really flexible and they offered classes during the day and the evening.
Kaplan [University] started offering online classes for my degree which really ended up being helpful to me because I didn’t have to be here on campus all of the time and I could get work done at night after I got my daughter to bed. I chose to study business management because I want to one day have my own business. Now that I have graduated from Kaplan [University], I am still working full time. I work as a case manager at a shelter for domestic violence. My business degree has contributed to my current job because I am able to move into different areas at my workplace and move more into the administrative side of things instead of the direct care and that was one of my goals.
Since graduating from Kaplan University my life has changed. For one, I am more confident when it comes to applying for jobs. It has also changed in my home life with my daughter; she is very proud of me—that her mom is successful and that is important to me.”
Today, the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) issued a report card on President Obama's immigration efforts over the past seven years and made recommendations for how to reform immigration in his last year.
“In recent days and weeks he has shown leadership in protecting refugees from Syria,” said AILA President Victor Nieblas Pradis. “But until recently, the president's response was timid and he still plans to resettle only 10,000 Syrian refugees this year. He can save many more lives by setting his target at 100,000 Syrian refugees.”
“In our own hemisphere, when Central American individuals and families, including young children, arrived at our southern border seeking refuge from the horrific violence plaguing those countries, the president should have protected them, but instead, he treated them as a border threat. The president should acknowledge that the situation in Central America is a humanitarian crisis and use every tool at his disposal to protect those fleeing. Most important he should stop detaining thousands of families.”
“The reforms to the legal immigration system he promised a year ago have moved forward at a glacial pace, earning him an incomplete. He can benefit the economy enormously by implementing plans to encourage research, development and entrepreneurial start-ups.”
