The American Cancer Society and the CVS Health Foundation today awarded grants to 20 U.S. colleges and universities as part of their Tobacco-Free Generation Campus Initiative (TFGCI), a $3.6 million multi-year program intended to accelerate and expand the adoption and implementation of 100 percent smoke- and tobacco-free campus policies. The announcement coincides this week with the American Cancer Society Great American Smokeout. The Tobacco-Free Generation Campus Initiative is part of Be The First, CVS Health's five-year, $50 million initiative that supports education, advocacy, tobacco control, and healthy behavior programming to help deliver the nation’s first tobacco-free generation. Little Colby Boudreaux is moving his legs and feet. While this is something most parents take for granted, for Colby it’s remarkable. He underwent a life-changing surgery at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans to correct the myelomeningocele birth defect, the most serious form of spina bifida… 12 weeks before he was born. During a groundbreaking surgery, Ochsner Medical Center’s fetal surgery team of 18 physicians and nurses operated on the 23-week-old fetus while still in his mother’s uterus, a procedure that fewer than 10 hospitals in the United States are able to perform. Flying takes a heavy toll on Americans’ performance: according to results released today from a 1Above survey conducted online in May by Harris Poll among over 2,000 U.S. adults, 81% of U.S. fliers (Americans who’ve ever flown) whose most recent flight was an hour or longer say they need one full day or more to recover after a flight. Yet results show poor hydration and flying habits abound - factors that greatly exacerbate jet lag symptoms and health risks long after each flight. 1Above, the New Zealand brand behind the flight drink designed to help people combat jet leg and arrive ready, is releasing these findings as they launch in North America this week. Today, the American Lung Association's LUNG FORCE initiative is joining forces with Academy Award®-nominated actress, Laura Dern, country music star Kellie Pickler, and Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning actress, Valerie Harper, during National Women’s Lung Health Week (May 10th -16th) to share their voices in an effort to defeat lung cancer in women. Every eight minutes, a woman in the United States dies of lung cancer. It is the #1 cancer killer of women, killing almost twice as many women as any other cancer. Yet, awareness is extremely low. Only 1 percent of women cite lung cancer as a women’s cancer that is top-of-mind for them, according to the American Lung Association's Women's Lung Health Barometer. Now in its second year, LUNG FORCE, in partnership with national presenting sponsor, CVS Health, is empowering women and men everywhere to share their voices and make lung cancer a public health priority.
