CareFusion today announced its new Snowden-Pencer® laparoscopic take-apart instrument line, a portfolio of surgical instruments that can be easily disassembled to aid in cleaning and sterilization. “Our new take-apart laparoscopic instruments can help support safer cleaning protocols for reusable medical equipment, at a potential cost savings compared to disposable instruments,” said Jim Leitl, vice president and general manager of the Medical Specialties business of CareFusion. “This addition to our market-leading surgical portfolio introduces unique product features not previously seen in the market that will help improve the usability, versatility and comfort of this category of laparoscopic instruments.” The new line of take-apart instruments features three components designed to be intuitively assembled and disassembled, increasing the ability to visually inspect the instrument during cleaning. The instrument also features both audible and visual cues to help ensure it has been properly and securely assembled. The operating room (OR) needs better supply chain management systems and analytics to help reduce costs and support patient safety, according to a new Cardinal Health survey of surgical staff and hospital supply chain decision-makers. Nearly half (40 percent) of respondents revealed they’ve actually canceled a case, and more than two-thirds (69 percent) have delayed a case because of missing supplies. Furthermore, 27 percent have seen or heard of an expired product being used on a patient, and 23 percent have seen or heard of a patient harmed due to a lack of supplies. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) released its complete 18th annual multi-specialty statistical data today showing an aesthetic plastic surgery spend consistent with the figures for 2013, with Americans spending more than 12 billion dollars on surgical and nonsurgical procedures for the second year in a row. With more than 10 million cosmetic procedures performed in 2014, those that showed the largest growth in volume on a year-over-year basis included buttock augmentation (up 86%), labiaplasty (up 49%), and nonsurgical fat reduction (up 42%). Additionally, more men are turning to aesthetic cosmetic procedures, with dramatic increases seen in both surgical and nonsurgical options over the past 5 years and a 43% increase overall.
