Join the Sodexo fight against food waste. Stopping food waste is one of the quickest ways to curb climate change. Think about it. Americans throw out 25 percent of the food they prepare – that’s a quarter of your dinner plate or two slices from a whole pizza. Then what? The waste ends up in a landfill where it creates lots of damage. No, it doesn’t just biodegrade as you might think. Food waste creates methane gas, which is at least 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Methane wrecks the ozone layer and heats up the planet. You can stop it today. Not all heroes wear capes, and when it comes to fire and carbon monoxide safety, anyone can be a superhero. In honor of Fire Prevention Month this October, First Alert, the most trusted brand in home safety*,is encouraging everyone to be super prepared when it comes to whole home safety. First Alert has been helping protect homes and families since 1958. “Three of every five home fire deaths result from fires in homes without smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms**,” said Tarsila Wey, director of marketing for First Alert, a leader in residential fire and carbon monoxide (CO) detection devices. “Many of these tragedies could be prevented with proper placement and maintenance of working smoke alarms, as well as prior emergency and escape planning. Through a highly educational and fun campaign with our Super Prepared Family, we aim to help people understand the importance of practicing fire safety and involving their whole families when discussing the topic.” To view the multimedia release go to: https://www.multivu.com/players/English/8192351-first-alert-fire-prevention-super-prepared-family/

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed sweeping regulations that would require states to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity sector by an average of 30 percent nationally. This costly plan is another step in the administration's policies designed to eliminate low cost and reliable electricity and replace it with more expensive and less reliable sources. "The rule is a stunning attempt to remake the nation's entire electric grid at great cost to households and businesses across the US. Our manufacturing base will become less competitive because of higher electricity prices. The impact of this regulation will be felt by families as they will spend more to heat and cool their homes. Those on fixed incomes and seniors will be forced to pay a disproportionately higher share of their monthly budget on utilities," said Hal Quinn, president and CEO, National Mining Association." A coal pile buries the UN Headquarters; gas races down 42nd Street and then New York is lost under a mountain of CO2. These dramatic CGI scenes, illustrating actual quantities, create an immersive journey that really brings home the sheer scale of global carbon emissions and the urgency for action. This poignant four-minute film being launched today, as the UN Climate Summit in New York is kicking-off, allows us to visualize the critical part that carbon capture and storage (CCS) can play in limiting global temperature rise to 2°C above pre-industrial levels. Commissioned by the WBCSD and produced by Carbon Visuals the animation is a call to world leaders, industry experts, campaigners and scientists to help catalyze action and inform conversations about what is really needed to reduce carbon emissions. To celebrate the 116th anniversary of the invention of modern air conditioning, Carrier is donating dozens of heating and cooling systems to Habitat for Humanity’s annual Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project, including systems that support net zero energy. For the first time, four Habitat homes of St. Joseph County will achieve this distinction, meaning they will produce as much renewable energy as they consume over the course of a year. Carrier, a world leader in high-technology heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions, is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX). Net zero energy home construction is a bold departure from conventional homebuilding. Constructed to be air-tight, the homes are well-insulated, energy efficient, carbon emission-free, and they result in a net zero energy bill. High efficiency climate controls systems are essential in achieving a net zero home. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the typical American home spends approximately 43 percent of their energy bills on heating and cooling.
