When a child is born into the world, so is a parent. Among the very first things to cross the minds of new caregivers – aside from, “are there instructions?” – is “how do I keep this little one as safe?” This is at the core of The Honest Company’s mission to empower people to live happy and healthy lives. Millennial parents are growing at a rate of one million per year; and these new parents are placing value in investing in brands that are not only safe for their families, but also eco-friendly and affordable.
With a shared commitment to providing budget-conscious, trusted and thoughtfully designed options for parents making important choices in caring for their little ones, Babies“R”Us® and The Honest Company® have partnered to bring The Honest Company’s products to Babies“R”Us stores across the U.S., with an expanded assortment and sizes online at Babiesrus.com. Available now, customers will find everyday essentials from The Honest Company, including the brand’s popular seasonal print diapers, wipes, gift sets, bibs, lotions, sun care and formula; with homecare items, like detergents and cleaning solutions, rolling out later this year.

ASAP, in a commitment with The Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA), is conducting a national competition to identify and reward the most creative, impactful, and scalable school-based programs and technological innovations that promote physical activity for children. The contest will award a total of $500,000 in prizes, with individual awards of up to $100,000. In addition to monetary awards, top winners will advance to participate in funded pilot studies aimed at expanding both reach and impact.

In December 2012, we posted an OnSafety blog, warning of furniture, television and appliance-related tip-over incidents. At that time, CPSC reported nearly 350 deaths, most involving young children. Since then, more than 80 people have died when a dresser, TV, bookcase, table, appliance or other large item tipped over and fell on them. A new report from our staff indicates that 430 tragic deaths occurred between 2000 and 2013, and an estimated 38,000 annual injuries, many of which were serious, from 2011 through 2013.
In most of the incidents, a child was crushed by the product or struck on the head by the product. What is remarkable is the number of families who have turned tragedy into advocacy. Jackie Collas, a Philadelphia-area resident, is using social media to honor her son, Curren, and encourage parents to anchor their furniture. Lisa Seifert of Chicago created Shane’s Foundation to honor her precious son and to increase awareness, education and safety.

Despite a dramatic increase in participation over the last decade, a new household survey commissioned by the Afterschool Alliance finds a significant gap between the demand and supply of afterschool programs. The 2014 edition of America After 3PM, which includes responses from 30,000 U.S. families, finds that for every child enrolled in an afterschool program, there are two more who are not and whose parents would enroll their child, if a program were available.
