Most Americans appear hopeful and optimistic about aging according to a new, national study from Parker, one of America’s leading aging services organizations that this year celebrates its 110th anniversary. Key findings from Parker’s “Aging in America Survey”—which examines the nation’s changing attitudes and opinions around growing older in the U.S.—include:
• A vast majority of Americans (71%) do not fear or worry about aging very much or at all.
• More than half of those surveyed (62%) believe that 80 is not too old to serve in government, run a marathon, be CEO of a Fortune 500 company, teach a class, or practice yoga.
• Those surveyed were evenly split (49% each) in describing the experience of growing older in America today with positive words (e.g., “hopeful,” “relevant,” “vibrant”) vs. negative words (e.g., “scary,” “depressing,” “lonely”).
• Nearly two-thirds (59%) of Americans feel that not enough technology innovation focuses on the lifestyles of older people.
• While 38% of Americans feel the most positive thing about getting older is gaining more experience and wisdom, only 1% believes it is acquiring greater wealth and material goods.

On January 12, 2010, a devastating earthquake hit Haiti, killing more than 230,000 people and displacing approximately 1.5 million. Children were orphaned; families were left homeless; and homes, schools and hospitals destroyed. As the most-visited travel destination in the United States, the Orlando tourism community was quickly up and running post-Hurricane Irma, hosting eager visitors from around the world. Due to a strong tourism infrastructure that hosts an average of 500,000 visitors a day, the region maintains a high level of preparedness for storms and historically resumes operations soon after.
Immediately after the storm, the hospitality industry began quickly clearing debris and returning the destination to normal business operations. Madison Taliaferro spent weeks in the hospital in 2012. After a decade of suffering from cystic fibrosis, she underwent a double lung transplant. She powered through the difficult surgery and the recovery that followed –long days of physical therapy and rehabilitation. Her parents were there. Her best friend visited from Kansas. Grandparents rotated shifts so she was never alone. But one request still lingered.
“I just wanted to see my dogs,” she remembers.
Having suffered from the effects of chronic illness for the decade prior, Madison was no stranger to long days at home, isolated from the school germs that could turn her illness into a critical condition with a single sneeze. When her friends couldn’t visit, her dogs were there. But at the hospital, they weren’t.

The 6th forum has become a record-breaking one by every measure by gathering 18,200 participants from 98 countries. During three thematic day-long sessions on business, government and society, presentations of more than 650 speakers took place.
Within the framework of the forum business program and in the press center 42 agreements were signed, including 24 partnership agreements with the Skolkovo Foundation. On 26 – 28 October Skolkovo Technopark hosted the 5th annual Open Innovations Forum. This event was important for developing Russia’s innovative ecosystem. This Forum welcomed more than 13 500 guests from more than 100 countries, 600 speakers, hosted more than 100 sessions. More than 300 investors and venture funds, about 1 200 representatives of innovative structures, more than 2 000 corporate representatives, and 3 000 startups took part in the Forum.
This year for three days Skolkovo Technopark became a working space for open discussions, associate meetings and a search for partners and investors. The Forum’s success was the direct result of the number of meetings held and agreements achieved – above 700 negotiations were conducted on the venue, more 50 partner agreements were signed.

“I got out of high school and started working. I had a family very young. About the time I was 28 I decided I needed to go to school. I went and got my associate’s degree in nursing at that time. I had worked in labor and delivery, and that’s my niche. I like it–I like babies, I like seeing families with their babies. Then I thought, I love floor nursing but there was something else I wanted to do.
We are in Coshocton, Ohio, which is very near to the heart of Amish country. I just needed to step out and do something else for myself. What I thought I would like to do required a bachelor’s degree and so I started looking down that road. I had kind of shopped around on the net looking for every last online class. You’re looking at price, you’re looking at length, you’re looking at what kind of clinical requirements are there–especially for me in nursing. I just started weeding and narrowing it down and I kept coming back to Kaplan University because it seemed to fit what I wanted to do at that time.
I enrolled to start my bachelor’s degree. There were times when I thought I was going to quit–family life is too much, work is too much, school is too much. I thought, no wasn’t an option. But of course that thought of having that extra two year degree bumps that salary up immensely. I was also thinking, ‘I’m going to have four kids I have to put through college, because now I’m encouraging them to go to college so I need to find a way to help them pay for that, too.
