Surmang Foundation has operated a primary care clinic in a remote, poor region of Western China, in partnership with the Chinese Government, Qinghai Province, and Yushu Prefecture, since 1992. The Core Project has treated over 60,000 patients for free, including medicine, since the clinic building was completed in 1996. Its focus is on the maternal and child mortality/morbidity rates of the region, among the highest in the world. It supports two local ethnic Tibetan doctors, Phuntsok Dongdrup and Sonam Drogha.
In our catchment area, the average annual income is about $50. Surmang Foundation’s remote site is a test case and a model for all of rural China, because impoverished nomadic Tibetans manifest in the extreme, most rural health and poverty problems. In cooperation with the Chinese Government and several hospitals, Surmang Foundation is currently expanding its mission to address the lack of access to basic services among the 28 million impoverished residents of rural, Western China and the lack of capacity of the local medical providers.
The pilot project will create a network of remote providers for IT-based distance medical education and remote diagnosis and referral. The pilot began in 2005 with the promulgation of an archive of all Tibetan and Chinese language health promotion materials and continued in 2006 with the installation of a satellite dish at the Surmang campus.
A part of that is the Community Health Worker Project funded by an AmCham grant in Spring 2005.

Subaru of America, Inc. today announced the completion of a Pet Travel Seat Pilot Study as part of its continued partnership with Center for Pet Safety (CPS), a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit research and consumer advocacy organization. Subaru and CPS have tested pet products most commonly used by pet parents when traveling. Phase one tested pet harnesses, phase two tested pet crates and carriers, and now, phase three has tested pet travel seats.
A pet travel seat is typically used in a vehicle to hold or elevate the pet, but does not offer full containment. The Pet Travel Seat Pilot Study found that while a pet travel seat may offer distraction prevention, it will likely not offer crash protection in the event of an accident, which could lead to injury of the pet and the human vehicle passengers. The quality of commonly available pet travel seats did not provide effective protection in a crash scenario.
Based on the scientific test evidence collected over the past four years, in part through its partnership with Subaru, CPS can now identify the safest travel options for most pets. For small dogs and cats, Center for Pet Safety recommends one of the 2015 Top Performing Carriers; for medium and large dogs either the 2015 Top Performing Crate - Gunner Kennels G1 Intermediate with 8' Tie Down Straps, or a Center for Pet Safety Certified Harness. Centennial College's Police Foundations program is a two-year program that consists of intense training equivalent to that of a paramilitary environment, which helps students to develop discipline and deportment. Courses are based on real-life experiences and case studies that incorporate a fundamental perspective on life. The program successfully prepares graduates for careers in the various police and military forces or in the field of security and related occupations and they have the ability to withstand pressure, communicate effectively, act as problem-solvers and help people in the community.
The Art Institutes schools are dedicated to providing students with hands-on, real-world education, in- and outside of the classroom. With a career-focused curriculum, experienced faculty and a range of community-based projects, students test their ideas against the needs of the real world.
One unique example is Student Studio: Bonnaroo. In partnership with the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, students from several Art Institutes schools are producing projects to make their creative mark on this year’s festival, June 9-12. The assignment was to create 15 student projects across all four areas of study at The Art Institutes: design, media arts, fashion and culinary.
