Ahead of World Stroke Day 2012 (October 29), European Policy Makers have joined over 90 Medical and Patient Organisations, and more than 100,000 people, in supporting the Global Atrial Fibrillation (AF) Patient Charter and calling for National Governments and the World Health Organisation to act to make the prevention of AF-related strokes a priority. The Charter outlines ways to improve the diagnosis and management of AF which, if implemented, could stop thousands of preventable strokes from occurring each and every year.

This year Krakow will host the UNESCO World Heritage Committee session, the European Lotteries Congress and the European Congress of Transplantology Nurses. The reports reveal that these key players in fundamental rights protection and promotion in the EU often lack resources, are not sufficiently independent or have weak mandates. In addition, some of the most vulnerable groups in society are unaware of their existence; only 16% of ethnic minority and immigrant respondents to the FRA's EU-MIDIS survey were able to think of any organisation offering support to people who have been discriminated against. 82% of EU-MIDIS respondents who were discriminated against in the 12 months prior to the survey did not report their experience anywhere.

The European Parkinson’s Disease Association (EPDA) has launched the third and final booklet in its Life with Parkinson’s series. This latest edition concludes a four-year awareness campaign, which aims to highlight the lack of understanding and knowledge concerning Parkinson’s that exists throughout Europe today. The booklet’s launch, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, was one of the many activities in a weekend dedicated to celebrating the organisation’s 20th anniversary year and its commitment to improving the lives of people with Parkinson’s (PwPs).
