The plan for reducing carbon emissions from existing power plants that President Obama unveiled at the climate conference in Paris will come with an overall price tag that should greatly trouble American consumers and business and will have little meaningful impact on global warming, cautioned the National Mining Association. “The plan will replace low-cost power supplies with more expensive and less reliable sources of power. And these increases will show up in monthly utility bills and have a particularly devastating effect on low-income households. About half of all American families already pay close to 20 percent of their disposable income on energy-related expenses.” said Luke Popovich, Vice President, Communications, National Mining Association. Imagine a device worn on your finger that allows intuitive, touch-free interaction with the digital world. Imagine a solar panel the size of a microcontroller that enables environmental intelligence in any building. Imagine integrating carbon monoxide sensing, thermostat control and biometric security capabilities to a smoke detector without increasing its size. This smarter, greener, battery-free world is fast becoming a reality with the world’s lowest-power microcontroller platform from Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NASDAQ: TXN). Codenamed “Wolverine” for its aggressive power-saving technology, this ultra-low-power MSP430 microcontroller platform offers at least 50 percent less power consumption than any other microcontroller in the industry (360 nA real-time clock mode and less than 100 µA/MHz active power consumption). The first devices based on this platform will be the MSP430FR58xx microcontroller series with expected availability in June 2012. Shell today announced that it will go ahead with the first carbon capture and storage (CCS) project for an oil sands operation in Canada. The Quest project will be built on behalf of the Athabasca Oil Sands Project joint venture owners (Shell, Chevron and Marathon Oil) and with support from the Governments of Canada and Alberta. CCS is critical to meeting the huge projected increase in global energy demand while reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, explained Peter Voser, Chief Executive Officer of Royal Dutch Shell plc. “If you want to achieve climate change goals, CCS has to be part of the solution. We are helping to advance CCS technology on a number of fronts around the world, but Quest will be our flagship project.” To view Multimedia News Release, go to http://multivu.prnewswire.com/mnr/prne/shell-first-oil-sands-css-project/56586/

Shell today celebrated the official opening of the Quest carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in Alberta, Canada, and the start of commercial operations there. Quest is designed to capture and safely store more than one million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) each year – equal to the emissions from about 250,000 cars. Quest was made possible through strong collaboration between the public and private sectors aimed at advancing CCS globally. The Obama administration is holding the White House Summit on Nuclear Energy today discussing the role of nuclear energy in reducing carbon emissions linked to the threat of climate change. The event will be live streamed on WhiteHouse.gov and YouTube beginning at 1 p.m. ET. “Nuclear energy has a really important role to play in the fight against climate change, and I think administrations in the past have recognized this but they’ve tended to be kind of quiet about it,” said Eileen Claussen, founder of the Pew Center on Global Climate Change. The banana is transported by plane, eggs by refrigerated trucks and yogurt can be found in open fridges, so to speak – the bottom line: In order to maintain a certain standard in a supermarket you are forced to use a lot of energy. An increasing number of supermarket owners have recognized responsibility and have started saving energy. For example, the Swiss cooperative Coop has set itself the goal of having all of their supermarkets being carbon-neutral by the year 2023.
