In 2002 the PEW Hispanic Center released a report titled, “Latinos in Higher Education: Many Enroll, Too Few Graduate.” In the 10 years since the study was published, how much has changed?
Recognizing the importance of cultivating Latino leadership and promoting higher education in the community, Miller Lite is partnering with the Dallas Cowboys and the ¡Adelante! U.S. Education Leadership Fund to launch the “Scoring for Education” program for the second consecutive year. The Miller Lite “Scoring for Education” program runs September 1 through October 31 in Texas (excluding Houston) and Oklahoma, where a donation to ¡Adelante! will be made for every select cans of Miller Lite sold. Consumers 21 and older can enjoy Miller Time with their friends, knowing that they are making a contribution to a great cause.

Seventy-five (75) percent of people with dementia and 64 percent of caregivers believe there are negative associations for those diagnosed with dementia in their countries, according to survey fielded by Alzheimer’s Disease International and published today in the World Alzheimer Report 2012: Overcoming the Stigma of Dementia. The report was released on Alzheimer’s Action Day as part of World Alzheimer’s Month activities engaging people in the cause and raising awareness about the disease.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, nuisance alarms or “false” alarms, are the leading cause for intentionally disabled smoke alarms in America. Unfortunately, each fire season also brings reports of serious injuries and deaths, and roughly two-thirds of home fire deaths happen in houses with no smoke alarms or working smoke alarms. A recent study from the University of Maryland’s School of Fire Protection Engineering shows that consumers now have a better choice when it comes to reducing nuisance alarms in their home. The new, patented IoPhic® smoke and fire alarm from Universal Security Instruments using smart microprocessor technology was proven to be more resistant to false or nuisance alarms than competitors.

Tyre care can be incorporated into other regular activities such as cleaning your car and filling it with petrol. That way it doesn’t feel like an extra task. You’ll maintain the quality of tyres and extend their life. The two key areas to attend to regularly are cleaning and tyre pressure. Washing your tyres with soapy water and a soft brush or sponge will keep tyres looking good. It also helps prevent cracks and other damage to the sidewall rubber. Do this whenever you wash your car. It is ideal to check tyre pressure when the tyres are cold. Do this at least once a month but more often if possible. Use a trusted gauge. The recommended tyre pressure for your tyres can be found on the tyres themselves or on the tyre placard, usually located on the body of the car, inside the driver’s door. If you’re unsure about checking tyre pressure, have a professional do it for you and show you how. Driving a car with tyres deflated or over inflated can cause long term damage to wheel alignment. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says deep fryer fires result in more than $15 million in property damage each year and hot oil splatter can cause serious burns to an adult or life threatening injuries to a child.

Each December, smokers across America decide to quit as one of their New Year’s resolutions. Out of the more than 45 million smokers in the United States, nearly 69 percent want to quit. Tobacco-related disease is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States; smokers, therefore, need to be armed with all of the available information to make the best, most informed choices about the smoking cessation medications and resources available. Successful quitters, like Cindy, spend the season supporting smokers who are ready to take a step towards quitting in the New Year.

A new Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) report titled The Silent Pandemic: Tackling Hepatitis C with Policy Innovation, made possible as a result of an educational grant from Janssen Pharmaceutica NV and published today, highlights the urgent need for countries around the world to develop strategies to tackle head-on the growing social and economic issues associated with Hepatitis C (HCV).
While the total number of infected individuals is unknown due to a lack of available data, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 150 million people globally are currently living with the blood-borne infectious disease, HCV. Of these, up to two thirds will develop chronic liver disease and one in five will develop cirrhosis. HCV is also the leading cause of liver transplantation worldwide and in the US the disease now accounts for more deaths than HIV.
