Imagine being diagnosed with one of the most rare and aggressive forms of breast cancer, given a five percent chance to live and told having children will never be an option. Southern California local Kommah McDowell was told just that— and then she went to City of Hope. It is estimated that almost 40 percent of men and women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer sometime during their lifetime. Kommah, who was diagnosed at age 29, now has her health and her son, thanks to discoveries made at City of Hope, where scientists and doctors turn laboratory breakthroughs into treatments that defeat cancer. Today, the nonprofit research and comprehensive cancer center near Los Angeles is rolling out a new initiative that builds on its legacy of discovery to let people know that City of Hope not only offers a uniquely patient-centric, integrated approach to care, but also with the help of donors and volunteers, it is pursuing research that will change the future of medicine. When a serious illness enters a family's life, there are many questions to ask and decisions to make. It is important to answer these questions quickly. The process can seem overwhelming. However, hospice care can be a wonderful resource for information about symptom management and comfort care. Hospice care professionals are available to help assess goals, pain management and care options during the decision-making process. Are your symptoms minimal or moderate? Are these symptoms just starting to affect your life? If you want to continue treatment but also need comfort and symptom management, palliative care (often called comfort care) maybe an option. Palliative care is patient and family-centered care that optimizes quality of life by anticipating, preventing and treating suffering. Palliative care specialists address the physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of patients and families, making sure they have access to all the information about the disease progression and the choices ahead. A patient can receive palliative care in conjunction with other treatments or therapies. The Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities is pleased to announce the launch of an egyptian – international Project using non-invasive and non-destructive surveying techniques for the scanning of Egyptian Pyramids under the title “ScanPyramids” project. Just because a mystery is 4500 years old doesn’t mean it can’t be solved…” This could be the motto of the exceptional scientific mission launched October 25, 2015, under the authority of the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities, initiated, designed and coordinated by the Faculty of Engineering of Cairo and the French HIP.Institute (Heritage, Innovation and Preservation). Radiographic muons, aka cosmic particles, infrared thermography, photogrammetry, scanner and 3D reconstruction: the most innovative technologies will be used by researchers of international renown and three major universities: the Faculty of Engineering of Cairo University, Université Laval of Quebec and Nagoya University of Japan. Their goal: to probe the heart of the largest pyramids of Egypt, without drilling the slightest opening. Four millennia after their construction, these ancient giants are far from having yielded their secrets. The first mystery concerns their construction, especially Khufu, the last of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still existing: it is still impossible to describe with certainty how this stone monument, the largest ever built by humans, was erected. The “ScanPyramids” project has already been approved by the permanent committee of the Ministry of Antiquities and has obtained all necessary permissions from concerned authorities. With a base of more than 5 hectares, its original height of almost 150 meters and a mass of 5 million tons, how was it possible to construct such a wonder in only 25 years? The nation’s largest provider of senior living solutions is offering tips for those who are concerned about showing signs of memory loss. These guidelines come along with Alzheimer’s Awareness month, celebrated each year in November. “Here at Brookdale, we have a simple formula for people who may be worried about memory loss as it relates to Alzheimer’s and dementia, whether for themselves or for a loved one,” said Kelly Scott Lindstrom, Vice President of Dementia Care for Brookdale. According to Lindstrom, three steps can help a person prepare for a potential Alzheimer’s diagnosis. First, know the signs of Alzheimer’s disease. There are 10 common signs, and just because an individual may exhibit a couple of them doesn’t mean he or she has developed dementia. Next, talk with your doctor, and he or she can help decipher a potential diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or if it is something unrelated. Dickey’s Barbecue Restaurants, Inc. is vigorously preparing for Thanksgiving, so you don’t have to. Last year, according to the National Restaurant Association, over 33 million Americans relied on restaurants for at least a part of their Thanksgiving meal. Dickey’s sold 400,000 pounds of holiday turkeys and hams nationwide in 2014 and that number is projected to increase by more than 20% this year. With the recent bird flu outbreak, many Americans have supply concerns when it comes to their holiday turkey. Some chains have even pulled turkey from their menus nationwide due to the shortage leading to increased costs. The national barbecue chain worked to secure its holiday supply early, prior to the shortage, which is just another way Dickey’s prepares for the holiday season so you don’t have to. Guests can rely on Dickey’s Barbecue Pit to provide holiday meats and complete feasts for an affordable and delicious holiday celebration. Just in time for Orangutan Caring Week, Audubon Zoo has raised the curtain on its new habitat for the critically endangered primates. Audubon’s family of Sumatran orangutans recently moved to their new Asian Domain home. The expanded exhibit provides three times as much space as their former facility in the World of Primates. New features include a moat, a cascading waterfall, palm trees and climbing structures that soar up to 45 feet, significantly taller than before. From the highest point, the orangutans have a panoramic view of much of the zoo and even boats as they cruise along the Mississippi River. “Orangutans are the largest arboreal animals on the planet,” said curator of Primates Courtney Eparvier. “And this gives them increased opportunity to exhibit their natural behaviors.” To view the multimedia release go to: http://www.multivu.com/players/English/7682751-audubon-zoo-orangutan-habitat/
