The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-powered charity dedicated to funding childhood cancer research, announces its Kids Are Special: Let’s Treat Them That Way national campaign. Focused on celebrating kids and giving them the happy childhoods they deserve, the campaign highlights the need for finding treatments that are specifically designed for kids with cancer.
With this bold new initiative, St. Baldrick’s looks to change the narrative around pediatric cancers, by showing kids as their truest selves – fun-loving, carefree, refreshingly honest, and always a little goofy. St. Baldrick’s puts the emphasis back on kids, while disempowering the label of “cancer.” All communication is strategically designed to remind us all that as adults we have the power to give kids happy childhoods free from cancer by helping to fund the best research worldwide. On August 3rd, LifeRide commenced with contemporary artist José Parlá, in partnership with RxArt, with an unveiling of original work by Parlá at Incarnation Children’s Center (ICC). ICC is New York City’s only skilled nursing facility providing specialized care for youth living with HIV/AIDS.

Humble Design Fueled by U-Haul, as it is now termed, was born seven years ago out of the idea that decent families emerging from homelessness in Metro Detroit deserve to come home to basic necessities like tables to eat at, sofas to sit on and beds to sleep in each night. Co-founder Treger Strasberg’s organization has assisted more than 660 families so far. With the support of U-Haul, that number will swell exponentially while expanding this noble pursuit to additional cities.

Maybe parents don’t know their teens as well as they think. According to a new 30 Hour Famine study, less than one in ten parents of teens (9%) describe teenagers today as “generous”. More than half of parents (58%) describe teenagers as “lazy”, and almost as many (54%) describe teens as “selfish”. And yet more than half of those teens themselves (53%) say the current economic climate has made them more aware of the needs of others. And almost nine out of ten (89%) of teens in the same online survey, conducted by Harris Interactive in January, say they wish they could do more to help those in need.
