It is time for a new New Testament. In February of 2012, a council of scholars and spiritual leaders, convened by religious scholar Hal Taussig, came together to discuss, debate, and reconsider which books belong in the New Testament. They talked about dozens of newly found texts, their lessons, and how they inform the previously bound books. Reading the existing New Testament alongside these new texts—The Gospel of Luke with The Gospel of Mary, Paul’s letters with The Letter of Peter to Philip, The Revelation to John with The Secret Revelation to John—offers the exciting possibility of understanding both—the new and the old—better. What were early Christians’ concerns? What was daily practice? What was a woman’s place? How was Jesus remembered and his message promoted? An expert group of specialists have come together to develop three new educational resources: the Journal of Perioperative Medicine, the Journal of Neonatal Intensive Care and an open-access online portal. These resources provide practical advice on key clinical issues, tackle controversial topics on which a consensus is needed, and highlight clinical concerns that need to be addressed in clinical practice. Ahead of World Mental Health Day, today sees the publication of the Mental Health Integration Index, a new research initiative commissioned by the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson and undertaken by the Economist Intelligence Unit.1 The research explores the challenges of integrating Europeans with mental illness into society and employment, within the European Union’s 28 Member States, plus Norway and Switzerland. Countries have been ranked according to their degree of commitment to support those living with mental illness; the findings demonstrate that while there are many examples of good practice across Europe, the whole region has a long way to go before people with mental illness are adequately supported and truly integrated into their communities.

In its 25th year, Toyota’s annual Opportunity Exchange (OE) has resulted in more than $250 million in contracts for M/WBEs.
The two-day event – which included best-practice seminars, panel discussions and a trade show – concluded Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the Duke Energy Convention Center in downtown Cincinnati. Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America (TEMA) started OE with about 100 attendees, and it has grown to become one of the largest minority business events in the country – attracting nearly 2,000 people who attend the event free of charge.

With gout incidence on the rise, an increasing number of medical professionals, across multiple fields of practice, will continue to be exposed to patients who suffer from gout and are seeking an accurate diagnosis and treatment. However, despite the availability of the “Guidelines for the Management of Gout” by the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), there are many inconsistencies in how gout is diagnosed, treated and discussed by medical professionals. Conflicting messages and treatment recommendations can contribute to confusion, and even lack of compliance, on behalf of the patient – particularly when gout is connected with comorbid conditions, such as kidney disease, heart disease or diabetes.

At a time when educators and policymakers are placing a high priority on quality early childhood education, Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts today announced results of a four-year study showing that its arts integration teaching model bolsters young children’s math achievement. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), is hosting a panel discussion today on the fast-evolving practice of fat grafting, and how surgeons are discovering best practices to produce the most natural looking results. Physician members of ASAPS concur that less is more when it comes to utilizing a patient’s own fat to enhance certain anatomical regions including the breast and buttocks. Further, they agree that fat grafting is proving to be a novel technique for body sculpting previously neglected areas including women’s and men’s shoulders, pectorals, legs and stomachs to create definition.
