Growing up inner city, Watts, California, Kevin never imagined himself as an athletic icon, especially in track and field. However, in high school after joining the track and field team, it was clear that Kevin had the talent for speed and agility. In the 1992 Barcelona Olympic games, Kevin earned a gold medal and became the new world record holder for the 400m hurdles at 46.78 seconds. After mental and physical preparation for the Barcelona Olympic games, Kevin knew he could focus on the goal and beat the 11-year standing world record for the 400m hurdles. 15 years later, his world record still holds at 46.78 seconds. Am Rande der New York International Auto Show stellt Volkswagen of America den Rallycross-Beetle mit Allradantrieb vor, dessen TSI-Motor mehr als 560 PS (412 kW) leistet. Volkswagen of America hat sich für dieses Projekt mit dem US-Rennsport-Spezialisten Andretti Autosport zum Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross Team zusammengeschlossen, das zwei Global Rallycross (GRC) Fahrzeuge für die Rennfahrer Tanner Foust und Scott Speed stellt. Das Team startet die Saison zunächst mit zwei modifizierten Polos auf der Bodengruppe des 2013 World Rally Championship-Siegerautos. Im Sommer erfolgt dann der Wechsel auf den GRC Beetle, wie er in New York präsentiert wird. Rallycross gehört zu den Motorsport-Disziplinen in Amerika, deren Fangemeinde am rasantesten wächst - sowohl in Besucherzahlen als auch in Bezug auf TV-Einschaltquoten. Die anspruchsvollen Rundkurse bestehen teils aus Staubpisten, teils aus Asphalt und bieten den Zuschauern durch Niveauunterschiede mitunter spektakuläre Sprünge der Wettbewerbsfahrzeuge von über 20 Meter Länge.
A year ago, Falaniko Penesa, 26, of Upolu, Apia, Samoa, finished second in the World Fireknife Championship, losing out to five-time champion Mikaele Oloa of Waialua, Hawaii.
Penesa spent the past year “practicing every day to make my moves flow” and the hard work paid off, as he won the 25th Annual World Fireknife Championship on Saturday night (May 13), beating out Oloa by one point on the combined scorecards of the seven judges. Kepanipaa Damaso of Waikoloa, Hawaii finished third.
Penesa, who performs at Hong Kong Disneyland, dazzled the sold-out crowd at the Polynesian Cultural Center’s Pacific Theater with an amazing routine that had him spinning, twirling and juggling one and two fireknives at lightning-fast speed, often behind his back and overhead.
