Unfortunately, as Graham is adopted, he doesn\\\'t have an HLA-identical sibling to act as a donor for him. So the Red Cross here in Australia searched the Bone Marrow Registries worldwide for 9 months to find a match. Graham has a rare tissue type and a match was not found. Thanks to generous donations of over $400,000, Graham was able to travel from his home in Melbourne, Australia to Seattle in the USA for a revolutionary, life-saving stem cell treatment in April 2008. On Wed 6th August, he was the 8th person in the world to receive a Stem Cell Transplant using stem cells grown in the lab from an umbilical cord. The treatment was a complete success and he is now leukaemia free. He is back in Melbourne, recovering from the treatment but still has outstanding medical bills of $416,000.

An international team of researchers led by Gerard D. Schellenberg, PhD, a member of the CurePSP Genetics Consortium and professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, has identified three new genes that can increase the risk of people developing Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). PSP is a rare neurodegenerative brain disease, similar to Parkinson’s disease, which causes severe disability by destroying parts of cells that allow the brain to function normally. While PSP has underlying biological similarities to Alzheimer’s disease, a disease which primarily affects memory, PSP impacts a person’s physical movement and bodily functions. PSP leads to progressive decline in patients — there is no known cause or cure. To view Multimedia News Release, go to http://multivu.prnewswire.com/mnr/psp/49958/

A new national survey shows most preteens and teens engage in day-to-day activities that may put them at risk of contracting meningococcal meningitis, a rare, but serious bacterial infection that can cause meningitis and take the life of an otherwise healthy child in just a single day. The National Association of School Nurses (NASN), in collaboration with Sanofi Pasteur, conducted the survey as part of its Voices of Meningitis back-to-school vaccination awareness initiative. No conversation is more top-of-mind for today’s business and marketing leaders than the impact of social media on the changing face of business in this tough economy. Simon Mainwaring, author of the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Amazon bestseller “We First: How Brands and Consumers use Social Media to Build a Better World”, is at the forefront of this discussion, as he proposes a vision for the re-purposing of the private sector that he characterizes as a shift from “Me-First” to “We-First” capitalism. So timely is his proposal that Amazon named it a Top 10 Business Book for 2011, and strategy+business named it their best Marketing Book of 2011, stating, “We First is that rare marketing book that is truly visionary.” To view Multimedia News Release, go to http://www.multivu.com/mnr/51616-we-first-social-branding-seminar-simon-mainwaring

New findings from the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – Washington University Pediatric Cancer Genome Project (PCGP) have helped identify the mechanism that makes the childhood eye tumor retinoblastoma so aggressive. The discovery explains why the tumor develops so rapidly while other cancers can take years or even decades to form. The finding also led investigators to a new treatment target and possible therapy for the rare childhood tumor of the retina, the light-sensing tissue at the back of the eye. The study appears in the January 11 advance online edition of the scientific journal Nature.
