Millions of U.S. drivers are putting themselves at risk and wasting fuel by failing to properly check tire pressure, according to a new survey by the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA). Only 15 percent of motorists revealed that they know how to correctly check tire pressure. Under inflated tires contribute to more than 600 highway fatalities and 33,000 thousand injuries each year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Additionally, under inflated tires cause U.S. drivers to waste 1.2 billion gallons of fuel annually. To view Multimedia News Release, go to http://multivu.prnewswire.com/mnr/rma/50200/

Hybrids have a safety edge over their conventional twins when it comes to shielding their occupants from injuries in crashes, new research by the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), an affiliate of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, shows. On average, the odds of being injured in a crash are 25 percent lower for people in hybrids than people traveling in nonhybrid models. The new finding is more good news for green-minded drivers who don’t want to trade safety for fuel economy. Not so long ago, car buyers had to choose between the two because fuel-efficient cars tended to be smaller and lighter. Now, consumers have more options than ever when it comes to picking an environmentally friendly — and crashworthy — vehicle. For more information, go to: www.iihs.org

According to the United Nations, worldwide nearly 1.3 million lives are lost in traffic accidents each year and this number could rise to nearly 1.9 million in the next 10 years. Furthermore, estimates show that nearly 90 percent of all crashes are caused by driver error, making advanced safety systems an important focus for automakers and governing agencies. Bosch offers active and passive safety technologies, as well as driver assistance functions that can help reduce the number of accidents and save lives. An early crop of advanced crash avoidance technologies includes some clear success stories when it comes to preventing crashes, insurance claim analyses by the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) show. Forward collision avoidance systems, particularly those that can brake autonomously, along with adaptive headlights, which shift direction as the driver steers, show the biggest crash reductions. Lane departure warning appears to hurt, rather than help, though it’s not clear why, and other systems, such as blind spot detection and park assist, aren’t showing clear effects on crash patterns yet. HLDI analysts looked at how each feature affected claim frequency under a variety of insurance coverages for damage and injuries. Clear patterns were seen in claims under property damage liability (PDL) insurance, which covers damage caused by the insured vehicle to another vehicle, and collision insurance, which covers damage to the insured vehicle. Frequency is measured as the number of claims relative to the number of insured vehicle years. An insured vehicle year is one vehicle insured for one year, two vehicles for six months, etc. The model years of the vehicles included ranged from 2000 to 2011, depending on when an automaker introduced a feature. Insurance data through August 2011 were used.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, nuisance alarms or “false” alarms, are the leading cause for intentionally disabled smoke alarms in America. Unfortunately, each fire season also brings reports of serious injuries and deaths, and roughly two-thirds of home fire deaths happen in houses with no smoke alarms or working smoke alarms. A recent study from the University of Maryland’s School of Fire Protection Engineering shows that consumers now have a better choice when it comes to reducing nuisance alarms in their home. The new, patented IoPhic® smoke and fire alarm from Universal Security Instruments using smart microprocessor technology was proven to be more resistant to false or nuisance alarms than competitors. Joerns Healthcare has launched the Dolphin Fluid Immersion Simulation® system that more effectively prevents and treats pressure-related injuries than other surfaces. This patented technology simulates the effect of floating in water for patients on hospital beds, stretchers, and in wheel chairs. The Dolphin technology continually adjusts to the patient’s body, promoting tissue perfusion and oxygenation, and minimizing injury related to compromised blood flow. The Dolphin is also proven to accelerate healing of advanced stage or multiple pressure ulcers, muscle flaps, skin grafts, burns and other wound conditions. According to State Farm® claims data, more cooking fires occur on Thanksgiving than any other day of the year. In fact, grease and cooking-related claims more than double on Thanksgiving Day compared to an average day in November. With the popularity of turkey frying, people are at risk for fryer related fires and injuries. U.S. fire departments are responding to more than 1,000 fires each year in which a deep fryer is involved. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says deep fryer fires result in more than $15 million in property damage each year and hot oil splatter can cause serious burns to an adult or life threatening injuries to a child.
