Being 'social' is considered by many as a key attribute of modern operations for a broad spectrum of businesses. Even more believe it's the single most important driver of change in the marketing communications industry, but tangible examples of these are considerably rarer than social media theorists. The IPA in association with PR Newswire are proud to present the first in a series of events that will explore how social media and related techniques are actually being applied today. The clear boundaries between advertising, marketing communications and PR are dissolving in a world of mainstream social media usage. Over the past six months UK small-to-medium-sized businesses (SMBs) have grown on average by six per cent despite the broader UK economy struggling, according to the latest SMB Index from HP. HP’s survey of 1,000 SMBs, with between 1 and 50 employees shows that, compared to that of the previous six months, growth for UK SMBs has slowed slightly but optimism is still strong, with SMBs expecting to grow by up to 13 per cent over the next year. Optimism in the economy is also strong, with 66 per cent of SMBs optimistic about the year ahead. SMBs in Financial Services have grown the most (13 per cent), followed by Manufacturing (10 per cent). SMBs in Retail (4 per cent) and Professional Services (1 per cent) have seen the least growth. Nearly half of UK SMBs (48 per cent) are turning to social media to help grow their business and reach new audiences, with 56 per cent of sole traders recognising its value the most. However, although SMBs are finding social media beneficial for networking purposes (83 per cent), and as a mechanism for advertising (57 per cent), many SMBs are underestimating its true potential for business growth and lead generation. According to a new report, How Can We Avoid a Stroke Crisis in the Asia-Pacific Region?, urgent coordinated action is needed to avoid millions of preventable strokes, which leave many patients who have atrial fibrillation (AF) both mentally and physically disabled, or dead, every year. The report, launched today during the 18th Asian Pacific Congress of Cardiology (APCC) by Action for Stroke Prevention, a group of health experts from across the globe, proposes urgent measures to prevent stroke in Asia-Pacific patients with AF, the most common, sustained abnormal heart rhythm and a major cause of stroke. The report’s recommendations are endorsed by 32 leading Asia-Pacific and other global medical societies and patient organizations, reinforcing and recognizing the need for a call to action. The interesting part can be found inside! Actually, this is not entirely true anymore, because packaging has reached a high-tech level for some time now. Now it can even speak. But apart from that the wrapping-industry has been developing in many directions: packaging has to be ecological, well legible, act as advertising space and of course, if nothing else, also be nice-looking. In any case, the trade fair interpack in Düsseldorf is the place to be when it comes to packaging.

Bayer HealthCare’s Consumer Care division announced today the introduction of Bayer® Advanced Aspirin, the next generation of aspirin for pain relief. Using the patent-pending Pro-Release™ Technology, Bayer Advanced Aspirin is clinically proven to relieve tough pain twice as fast as previous Bayer® Aspirin tablets. With the introduction of aspirin in 1899, Bayer offered one of the first widely accessible analgesics, or pain relievers, to consumers. Today, Bayer's overall global Aspirin business continues to grow, and had double-digit, year-on-year sales growth in Q1 2011. Yet, while Bayer continues to be a leader in the category, for many U.S. consumers, Bayer Aspirin is primarily synonymous with cardiovascular use. Now, through a combination of technological innovation and rich analgesic heritage, Bayer is introducing a new standard in aspirin for tough pain relief with Bayer Advanced Aspirin. More than 24 million Americans currently have asthma. Every day, 11 people in the United States die from asthma and the disease accounts for one-quarter of all emergency room visits each year. For many people with asthma, their home may be part of the problem. Any house or apartment can contain a variety of asthma “triggers,” which can include allergens and irritants – such as dust mites, mold, pet dander and strong fumes or odors – that can negatively affect someone with asthma.
