With the addition of a star-studded panel of guest judges, including designers Thom Filicia, Robert and Cortney Novogratz, Nate Berkus and Kathy Ireland, as well as Food Network’s Paula Deen and Dina Manzo, event planner and former cast member of Real Housewives of New Jersey, HGTV Design Star returns for a sixth season on Monday, July 11, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The series’ celebrated line-up of stars includes HGTV’s own returning judges Genevieve Gorder, Candice Olson and Vern Yip, as well as a guest appearance on the panel by John Gidding. David Bromstad, the first HGTV Design Star champion, will mentor the finalists as they compete for a chance to win their own show on HGTV. Hosted by Tanika Ray, HGTV Design Star will air on Mondays through September 12.

As energy demand continues to increase along with gasoline prices, students from Mater Dei High School in Evansville, Ind., demonstrated just how fuel-efficient vehicles can become with the help of innovative design and a lot of hard work. Their entry in the sixth annual Shell Eco-marathon Americas achieved an impressive best run of 2,188 miles per gallon in the Prototype class. Mater Dei also achieved the highest mileage, 611 mpg, in the UrbanConcept class with “George,” a vehicle modeled after George Jetson’s cartoon flying car.

Today, Race Imboden, 2011 graduate of The Dwight School, was officially named to the United States Olympic Team by the US Fencing Association. After the fourth World Cup event, he mathematically qualified for the Olympics in Men’s Foil based on his high team rankings. Mr. Imboden is currently #6 in the FIE (Fédération Internationale d’Escrime) World Senior Rankings, #2 in the USA Fencing Division I (Senior), and #2 in the USA Fencing Under 19 Division (Junior).

On the eve of his 16th birthday, Greyson McCluskey from Indian Trail, North Carolina was named the national winner of Wouldn’t It Be Cool If…, a campaign jointly presented by Time Warner Cable’s philanthropic science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) initiative, Connect a Million Minds, and i.am FIRST, founded by artist, entertainer and entrepreneur will.i.am. The campaign challenged youth ages 10 – 15 to dream up the coolest idea to make their life, community or the world more awesome, and then to think about how science and math could help bring those ideas to life. Greyson McCluskey, an honor student and aspiring architect, developed his Baby Safe Rider – a mechanism for toddler car seats that would detect the onset of heightened temperatures in babies – as a way to address the rising incidents of vehicular Hyperthermia fatalities in the U.S. Greyson was inspired to create the Baby Safe Rider after the recent birth of his cousin. He entered the Wouldn’t It Be Cool If… contest after his mom saw a national public service announcement featuring will.i.am.

Some of the world’s most famous whisky makers, Johnnie Walker, Bushmills, J&B and Talisker, have harnessed the creative talents of up-and-coming independent film makers around the globe to help inspire people to ‘raise a glass’ to their dads this Father’s Day.
The whisky makers partnered with MOFILM, a global network of more than 45,000 film makers, to seek short films that pay tribute to fathers in a campaign called ‘Raise a glass to your dad’.
MOFILM challenged 20 film makers to create a short piece that told the story of their relationship with their father and how whisky plays a part in that.

LG Electronics USA today announced that 17-year-old Austin Wierschke from Rhinelander, WI won the sixth annual LG U.S. National Texting Championship for the second time in a row. As we speak, the world’s largest message-in-a-bottle is being towed 200 nautical miles off the coast of Tenerife where it will be released to the ocean currents tonight. The bottle which is registered as a boat, was constructed by the owner of Koeningsegg, baptized by world know explorer Jarle Andhøy – and Miss Tenerife – and will be tweeting photos live via satellite.
