Thousands of motorcycles are stolen in the U.S. each year, and fewer than 40 percent are ever recovered. So when a motorcycle has been missing for 46 years, well the chances of it ever showing up again are slim.
But don't tell that to Don Devault. His 1953 Triumph motorcycle was returned to him this week in Omaha, Nebraska - the same place it was stolen in 1967, when Don was 27.

The rate at which people file insurance claims for theft is highest for versions of the 2007-09 Cadillac Escalade, a luxury SUV, followed by the Ford F-250 crew pickup, Infiniti G37 luxury car, and Dodge Charger with a HEMI engine. Theft rates for these vehicles are 3 to 5 times as high as the average for all vehicles. These are the latest theft loss results for passenger vehicles 1 to 3 years old published by the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), an affiliate of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Summer is the hottest season of the year for vehicle theft, with July and August ranking as the highest auto theft months of the year, and July 4th in particular ranking #3 (latest FBI data) on the list of holidays with the highest incidents of vehicle theft. Vehicle theft protection experts warn that consumers are growing increasingly complacent about auto theft and are not using even common sense measures to protect their vehicles from theft.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau today reported that in 2011, motorcycle thefts were down 6 percent from their 2010 total. There were 46,667 motorcycles reported stolen in 2011 compared with 49,791 in 2010—a decline of 6 percent. The theft rate averages out to one theft every 11 minutes. All data is from theft reports contained in the National Crime Information Center.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) today released its annual Hot Spots vehicle theft report and California dominates once again. Hot Spots is a per capita review of vehicle thefts from the nation’s metropolitan statistical areas (MSA). NICB data is in line with preliminary FBI vehicle theft data for 2012 which appears to end an eight-year downward trend in vehicle theft.
