If diagnosed early enough 90% of melanoma cases can be treated effectively. An exclusive study carried out by Ipsos for La Roche-Posay in 23 countries across all continents looks into the different attitudes to the sun and general knowledge of the risks associated with exposure. A massive 88% of those questioned are aware of the risks of developing skin cancer when exposed without protection to the sun. However, just 1 in 2 of those questioned have ever consulted a dermatologist for a mole screening and 1 in 4 of them have never even checked their own moles on their body. Just because somebody has been diagnosed with a mental illness doesn't mean they are a threat to you or to our society. Is it not the same kind of ignorance as racism when we stigmatise them with falsehoods and our own prejudices?

Imagine being diagnosed with one of the most rare and aggressive forms of breast cancer, given a five percent chance to live and told having children will never be an option. Southern California local Kommah McDowell was told just that— and then she went to City of Hope. It is estimated that almost 40 percent of men and women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer sometime during their lifetime. Kommah, who was diagnosed at age 29, now has her health and her son, thanks to discoveries made at City of Hope, where scientists and doctors turn laboratory breakthroughs into treatments that defeat cancer. Today, the nonprofit research and comprehensive cancer center near Los Angeles is rolling out a new initiative that builds on its legacy of discovery to let people know that City of Hope not only offers a uniquely patient-centric, integrated approach to care, but also with the help of donors and volunteers, it is pursuing research that will change the future of medicine. Could migraine patients be doing more to get the most out of their medical visits? According to a new national survey released by the National Headache Foundation (NHF) and GlaxoSmithKline, the answer is yes. For the nearly 30 million migraine sufferers in the U.S., including six million treating with prescription medication, these survey results may have important implications. The survey, conducted online in November 2010 by Harris Interactive, included 1,218 diagnosed migraine patients taking prescription medications for their migraine attacks as well as 533 physicians who treat between five and 10 migraine patients per week. The findings revealed disparities between what patients and physicians each reported typically discussing during office visits. Pet owner Judy Bernath loves her 11-year-old cat Billy, so when she noticed he had become lethargic, started losing weight and drastically changed from the happy cat he had once been, she made a visit to see her veterinarian Dr. David Bruyette, medical director at VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital. The VCA team diagnosed Billy as being hyperthyroid within a few days, and Dr. Bruyette shared conventional therapy options with Judy, like radiation therapy, daily pharmaceuticals and surgery. In addition, he discussed and ultimately recommended a new and different approach for Billy’s case – nutritional management. Researchers have identified the first gene mutation associated with a chronic and often fatal form of neuroblastoma that typically strikes adolescents and young adults. The finding provides the first clue about the genetic basis of the long-recognized but poorly understood link between treatment outcome and age at diagnosis. The study involved 104 infants, children and young adults with advanced neuroblastoma, a cancer of the sympathetic nervous system. Investigators discovered the ATRX gene was mutated only in patients age 5 and older. The alterations occurred most often in patients age 12 and older. These older patients were also more likely than their younger counterparts to have a chronic form of neuroblastoma and die years after their disease is diagnosed.
