Vehicles are doing a better job of protecting people in crashes, but a new crop of advanced technology aims to prevent many crashes from happening altogether. A new study by the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) finds that one kind of advanced forward collision avoidance system is working to prevent about a quarter of the common low-speed crashes that happen in everyday commuter traffic. The study of insurance claims found that Volvo XC60 midsize SUVs outfitted with a standard collision avoidance feature called City Safety are far less likely to be involved in low-speed crashes than comparable vehicles without the system. City Safety is designed to help a driver avoid rear-ending another vehicle in slow-moving, heavy traffic. Claims under property damage liability coverage — the insurance that pays for damage to vehicles that an at-fault driver hits — were filed 27 percent less often for the XC60 than other midsize luxury SUVs. Wildlands, Inc. announces the completion of habitat restoration at the Liberty Island Conservation Bank in Yolo County, California. The completion of construction caps a three year entitlement and permitting process with federal, state and local agencies in one of the most complex restoration projects in Wildlands 20-year history. The 186-acre restoration project focused on tidal aquatic habitat suitable for special-status fish species. The Liberty Island Conservation Bank is a collaborative effort between Wildlands, California Department of Fish and Game (DFG), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and will mitigate permitted impacts to fisheries habitat throughout the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. Tune in as the Emmy® Award-winning television series This Old House kicks off its first-ever Los Angeles renovation on PBS. With the help of local tradespeople, the expert crew gives a 1933 Spanish Colonial Revival located in the neighborhood of Silver Lake a “Hollywood-style makeover.” In order to accommodate a growing family, homeowners Kurt Albrecht and Mary Blee know they need to expand their home. The This Old House experts are working with Los Angeles-based contractor Steve Pallrand and his design-build firm Home Front on a modest 750-sq.ft. addition, which includes a new second floor, larger kitchen, new family room, two additional baths and two more bedrooms. Throughout the renovation, the series will focus on preserving and replicating the quaint period details that make the property unique, such as the clay roof tiles, arched doorways, tray ceilings, plaster ornamentation, inlaid floors and art deco light fixtures.
