The Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) today announced the grand opening of its multi-risk research center in Chester County, S.C.
The state-of-the-art, multi-hazard applied research and training facility will significantly advance building science by enabling researchers to more fully and accurately evaluate various residential and commercial construction materials and systems. The facility is entirely funded by the property insurance industry.

The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Ad Council were joined today by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to launch a new series of Spanish-language public service advertisements (PSAs) encouraging Americans to take steps to prepare for emergencies. The PSAs were launched as part of National Preparedness Month and direct viewers to Listo.gov, the Spanish-language extension of Ready.gov. According to a recent Ad Council survey, nearly six in ten Hispanic Americans have not taken steps to prepare for an emergency.

Hurricane Katrina’s deluge was Biblical. When it hit Louisiana and Mississippi the morning of August 29, 2005, the storm caused fearsome destruction. Then the disaster grew worse. The levees – the man-made walls built to protect New Orleans from the water surrounding it – failed. Their collapse flooded 80 percent of the city.
