When Hurricane Sandy ravaged the East Coast last October, it not only left thousands of miles of devastation, but it also uprooted the lives of all in its path – including millions of pets.
PetSmart Charities’ Emergency Relief team sprang into action to help more than 60,000 displaced pets in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, West Virginia and Maryland. Sherrie Buzby, a photojournalist for PetSmart Charities and New Jersey native, captured this unique relief effort in photos.

Domestic violence happens 145 times every hour in the U.S. It affects more women than breast cancer, lung cancer and ovarian cancer combined. As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, The Allstate Foundation has partnered with actress Rosario Dawson for the Purple Purse campaign to raise awareness of domestic abuse and the role finances play in helping survivors break free from violence. In its third year, The Allstate Foundation Purple Purse campaign has pledged to donate up to $350,000 to the YWCA for programs that help domestic violence survivors gain the financial knowledge and resources needed to live independently.

Devoted cat owner Ricci Rivera, together with his cat named Bella of San Tan Valley, AZ, were named the Grand Prize Winner among hundreds of entries to the Tidy Cats® with Glade™ Tough Odor Solutions Littervention Contest. In his entry, Rivera attributed his need for a Littervention due to his home’s open floor plan, which can carry overwhelming litter box odors throughout the house. A new test program by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rates the performance of front crash prevention systems to help consumers decide which features to consider and encourage automakers to speed adoption of the technology.
