Dr. Alan E. Nelson, EdD, Lecturer of Management at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, and Founder of KidLead has been working on the first-ever leadership program for preschoolers and early childhood students. This social innovation is designed to identify influencers while they’re still very moldable in character and skill, as well as to teach others on how to problem solve in teams and be led by peers. Dr. Nelson is considered a global expert in young leader development, but this work is a first, to start so young.

The UNCF in partnership with the Ad Council, announced today the launch of Better Futures, a national multimedia public service effort that will build on their 41-year old campaign to help African American students get to and through college.
Created pro bono by Y&R, new Better Futures PSAs transform the idea of donating to a cause to a more powerful idea of investing in the future, including the introduction of a stock for social change, where people can see the direct social return of their investment. Economists were consulted for the campaign and developed an algorithm to show the social return of donating just $10 to UNCF, including the impact on earnings, crime savings and health savings.

Inspired by its surrounding southwestern landscape, the Health Sciences Education Building (HSEB) at The University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix is one of the most innovative construction projects in the United States utilizing predominately recycled copper. Using nearly 6,000 copper panels and more than 10,000 copper parts, this 268,000 square-foot building consists of six stories of administration and faculty offices, lecture halls, learning studios, flexible classrooms, clinical suites, gross anatomy facilities, laboratories and conference rooms.

The number of gout patients is rising, with an estimated 8.3 million American adults diagnosed with gout—but only 10 percent of them are being properly treated, according to the Gout & Uric Acid Education Society. To heighten awareness and knowledge about gout and to lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment, the society has released two new comprehensive kits to educate patients and provide consistent information for medical professionals. The release of the Take a Stand on Gout Patient Education Kit and Medical Professional Information Kit coincides with Gout Awareness Day, an annual commemoration on May 22 to call attention to the growing incidence of gout and to enhance knowledge so as to improve patient outcomes. The Air National Guard is proud to announce the new, interactive Air National Guard Mobile Experience. The hands-on, immersive experience takes attendees on a fast-paced journey through life in the Air Guard by letting them participate in simulated challenges that replicate the real-life experiences of Air Guard men and women during basic military training, technical school and on drill weekend. Through simulation, attendees will learn how they can serve their country part time while maintaining a fulfilling civilian life, by serving one weekend a month and two weeks a year near their home. The interactive experience, which will tour state to state until December, highlights the traditional career path of a guardsman, and is designed to educate Americans about Air Guard’s dual role in serving our nation and local communities.
