Eager to produce “job ready” graduates, many universities and colleges are teaching the real world skills young advisors need in the workplace. And to help more schools take their programs to the next level, TD Ameritrade Institutional1 has awarded its third annual Next Gen Financial Planning Grants: a $50,000 grant to the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, to expand an existing financial planning degree program, and $25,000 to Temple University in Philadelphia to foster development of a new program.

When asked how they feel about mixing their work and personal lives, 58% of Generation Mobile workers feel guilty, according to new research from MobileIron. The MobileIron Gen M Survey, a global study of more than 3,500 full- and part-time professionals who use a mobile device for work, highlights an emerging demographic in the workplace: Generation Mobile or “Gen M.” The study found that Gen M, which is composed of mobile workers who are either men age 18-34 or people with children under age 18 in their households, relies more heavily on mobile technologies than the general population to mix their work and personal activities.

Steelcase today released findings from its workplace research on how the physical environment can support or hinder mindfulness, along with five other dimensions of wellbeing. The researchers found that the physical environment offers behavioral cues, that can promote -- or hinder -- employee’s physical, cognitive and emotional states and long-term health.

The U.S. presidential campaign may be heating up, but it’s considerably cooler in the office, a new Robert Half survey suggests. Four in 10 (40 percent) workers interviewed characterized themselves as “occasional voters” when participating in office politics, limiting their involvement to issues that affect them directly. Another 39 percent said they are “neutral parties” who stay completely out of the fray.
Although most employees report not being heavily involved in office politics, 56 percent have observed political maneuverings on the job. Chief among these activities is gossiping, cited by 54 percent of respondents, followed by flattering the boss to gain favor (20 percent) and taking credit for others’ work (17 percent).
