Provident New York Bancorp announced today the completion of its previously announced acquisition of Sterling Bancorp, which became effective after the close of business on October 31, 2013. The combined company, known as Sterling Bancorp, will trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the new ticker symbol “STL”. With assets of nearly $7 billion, the company will specialize in serving small-to-middle market commercial and consumer clients across the greater New York metropolitan area. In connection with the acquisition, Sterling National Bank merged with Provident Bank. Provident Bank has converted to a national bank charter and has adopted the Sterling National Bank name.

Nearly 26 million Americans have diabetes, which can affect numerous parts of the body, including your teeth and gums.

Americans have a bit of a superiority complex when it comes to grading their financial prowess. Genworth’s latest Psychology of Financial Planning research reveals that more than half (52%) of Americans gave themselves an A or B grade on their saving and investing knowledge, while giving the average American a failing grade of D. What nearly everyone (97%) can agree on, however, is the importance of financial literacy and the fact that they don’t have enough (88%). Nearly six of ten Americans will develop kidney disease in their lifetime, according to a new analysis published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases. In comparison, lifetime risk of diabetes, heart attack and invasive cancer is approximately four in ten.
As a result of this and previous studies, the National Kidney Foundation is calling on healthcare professionals to screen patients in specific high-risk groups for kidney disease – those age 60 or older and those with high blood pressure or diabetes – by adding a simple urine albumin test for kidney damage to annual physical examinations.

Based on data provided by the California Solar Initiative (CSI), sales of new production homes with rooftop solar power systems nearly doubled from 2011 to 2012, signaling increasing home buyer demand to control monthly electricity costs using clean, renewable solar power.
An estimated 4,000 new production solar homes were built in California last year, ten times the number built just seven years ago during the housing construction boom. SunPower estimates that strong growth in the sector will continue, with more than 20 percent of new production homes being solar powered this year.
