The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History will open a new exhibition on American business July 1 in the Mars Hall of American Business. The exhibition, “American Enterprise” will have a strong focus on the nation's agriculture history which is one of four economic sectors in the exhibition. It will explore precision farming, environmental concerns and hybrid seeds.
“American agriculture has gone through a tremendous transformation in the past seven decades, becoming a high-tech industry, deeply affecting not just farmers themselves but every American and the American experience in general,” said Peter Liebhold, museum curator and chair of the Division of Work and Industry.
The companion book American Enterprise: A History of Business in America, will highlight significant artifacts from agriculture's humble beginnings to the technological advances that make it a leading industry in the United States.

The National Odor-Eaters Rotten Sneaker Contest celebrated its 40th anniversary with a fan-fare of festivities in New York City today. The competition that tests just how offensive sneakers can get, culminated with the crowning of the 40th pair of most odorous soles in the nation. Ready to be judged were seven finalists, ages six to fifteen, from across the country. They gathered at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in Times Square wearing the decrepit and redolent rubber-soles that won them regional recognition. Only one competitor’s sneakers were declared the stinkiest, and they belonged to 14 year old Kane Young-Hiss from Berthoud, CO.

Safe Horizon, the nation’s largest victim services agency, has opened a new Child Advocacy Center (CAC) in the Bronx, with significant support from the de Blasio Administration. This center will be staffed by experts from Safe Horizon, the Administration for Children’s Services, the New York Police Department, the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, the New York City Law Department and Montefiore Medical Center. Today, the Television Bureau of Advertising (TVB), the not-for-profit trade association of America’s commercial broadcast television industry, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the Ad Council launched their 11th year of “Project Roadblock: Local TV Puts the Brakes on Drunk Driving.” Launched in December 2003, Project Roadblock is the local broadcast television industry’s extension of NHTSA and the Ad Council’s ‘Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving’ PSA campaign. Since then, the multi-media campaign has served as an opportunity for local television stations to combat drunk driving by donating on-air, online and mobile advertising time and space for the PSAs. To date, broadcast TV stations across the nation have donated more than $34 million in media to support this effort.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) today released a national analysis of vehicle theft which compares annual statistics for thefts, population and vehicle registrations from 1960 through 2013. Just released FBI crime figures for 2013 show that 699,594 vehicles were reported stolen last year–a 58 percent reduction–from 1991 when vehicle theft reached an all-time high of 1,661,738.
Over the years, the single-vehicle family–long the norm in America–became the exception as it gave way to families with multiple vehicles. In 1960, there were 74,159,209 vehicles registered across the nation whose population that year was 180,671,158. Registrations as a percentage of that population stood at 41 percent. In 2012, that figure increased to 80.8 percent as registrations climbed to 253,639,386 distributed within the nation’s 313,873,685 in population.

A level IV trauma center in Washington State has installed copper components throughout its facility as another way of reducing hospital-acquired infections and keeping their patients safe.
Pullman Regional Hospital has become an early adopter of antimicrobial copper after studies found that the age-old metal could continuously kill deadly bacteria.
Each year, 2 million people in the United States are diagnosed with a hospital-acquired infection and nearly 100,000 people die. These infections are caused by common bacteria such as E. coli, MRSA, C. diff, CRE and VRE.
“It is a very serious problem,” said Ed Harrich, the director of surgical services for Pullman Regional Hospital. “I think every hospital across the nation is doing everything they can to try to deal with it the best that they can. But there’s bioburden on everything and people aren’t good at hand washing and there’s cross-contamination everywhere you go.”

Non-profit Enroll America, the nation’s largest health care enrollment coalition, is working with the Ad Council to encourage women to sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act during the next open enrollment period, which runs from November 15, 2014 through February 15, 2015.
To raise awareness, Enroll America is working with the Ad Council to continue its successful “Take Care, People” integrated public service advertising (PSA) campaign encouraging the uninsured, particularly women, to enroll. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, women make 80% of the health care decisions for their families. Women are also 47% more likely than their male counterparts to share information about health care with their friends, family and community. Lack of awareness is a critical issue among women, however, with 79% of those in the Enroll America study saying they do not know enough about the new law.
